Response of Turkey Poults to Soybean Lectin Levels Typically Encountered in Commercial Diets. 2. Effect on Intestinal Development and Lymphoid Organs

Abstract: Lectins are capable of altering intestinal morphology by binding to and disrupting the intestinal brush border membrane. They are also known to alter the weight of lymphoid organs. Therefore, we evaluated the effect of soybean lectin (SBL) on intestinal morphology and lymphoid organ weights of poults fed diets containing SBL. Dietary treatments evaluated in this study included a cornstarch and casein-based control (lectin-free) semipurified diet (PD) and semipurified diets containing 0.024 or 0.048% SBL (PDL a… Show more

“…Lymphoid tissues play an important role in the body defence against microorganisms. The bursa and spleen are sites of B cells and T cells differentiation, respectively (Fasina et al 2006). The relative lymphoid organs weight is used to investigate the immune status of birds and changes in weight may be associated to alterations in the function of lymphoid organs (Cooper et al 1966).…”

“…Structure of small intestine plays a vital role in nutrient digestion and absorption (Lenhardt and Mozes, 2003); however, manipulation in the feed may alter villus height to crypt depth ratio, and absorptive area of intestine (Fasina et al, 2006). Moreover, the supplementation of phenolic compounds, like curcumin, may decrease gut inflammation, increase nutrients digestibility and metabolic activity (de Beer et al, 2008;Buchanan et al, 2008;Giannenas et al, 2010).…”

“…The relative weight of lymphoid organs is often used to predict the immune status of an animal ( Abdel-Fattah et al, 2008 ); changes in weight may be related to alterations in the lymphoid organs’ function, and could result in an increased susceptibility to infections or a reduction in the ability of the animal to maintain productivity during a sanitary challenge ( Fasina et al, 2006 ). According to Fan et al (2013) propolis is able to enhance lymphocyte proliferation, and this can reflect in the lymphoid organs weight, impacting on immune function and disease resistance ability.…”
