Response of Prickly Sida and Soybeans to Various Herbicides

Abstract: Three preemergence and four postemergence herbicides were compared for control of prickly sida (Sida spinosaL.) in soybeans (Glycine maxMerrill) and for level of phytotoxicity to soybeans. As a preemergence herbicide, chlorbromuron [3-(4-bromo-3-chlorophenyl)-1-methoxyl-1-methylurea] provided better control of prickly sida than did linuron [3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1-methoxyl-1-methylurea] which was more consistently effective than was naptalam (N-1-naphthylphthalamic acid) plus dinoseb (2-sec-butyl-4,6-dinitrop… Show more

“…Forty pitted morningglory plants/m 2 reduced 20-cm-row soybean yield by 80% (Howe and Oliver 1987). Prickly sida, which is relatively less competitive with soybean, caused 9 to 14% yield loss (Jeffery et al 1976). Each of these weeds can cause significant yield loss in soybean on their own.…”

“…Prickly sida, entireleaf and pitted momingglory, and sicklepod reduce soybean yield (3,4,5,9,14) and can be difficult to control with many herbicides applied POST (9,16,17). Chlorimuron is a sulfonylurea herbi cide registered for use in soybean to selectively control many troublesome broadleaf weeds, including sicklepod…”

“…In the Pre‐plant Herbicide Study discussed previously, treatments most effective on prickly sida were those containing flumioxazin and in particular flumioxazin plus chlorimuron‐ethyl plus thifensulfuron‐methyl (Table 4), the same herbicides and rates evaluated at‐planting in the Pre‐plant, At‐Planting, and POST Program Study (Table 6). Other research has shown 89–98% residual control of prickly sida from PRE application of flumioxazin (Burke et al., 2002), cloransulam and cloransulam plus metribuzin (Barnes & Oliver, 2004), sulfentrazone (Vidrine et al., 1996), and linuron (Jeffery et al., 1976).…”

“…Similarly, a survey conducted in Arkansas in 2012, reported that prickly sida was present in approximately 36% of the sampled sites in the eastern Mississippi Delta area (Korres et al., 2015). Prickly sida densities of 50 to 120 plants m −2 are capable of reducing soybean yield 9–14% (Jeffery et al., 1976).…”
