Masonry material presents a mechanical response strongly dependent on the static and kinematic phenomena occurring in the constituents and at their joints. At the mesoscopic level the interaction between the units is simulated by means of specific mechanical devices such as the zero thickness interface model where the contact tractions and the displacement discontinuities are the primary static and kinematic variables respectively.In many cases the joint response depends also on internal stresses and strains within the interface layer adjacent to the joint interfaces. The introduction of internal stresses and strains leads to the formulation of the interphase model, a sort of enhanced zerothickness interface. With the term interphase we shall mean a layer separated by two physical interfaces from the bulk material or a multilayer structure with varying properties and several interfaces.Adopting the interphase concept, different failure conditions can be introduced for the physical interfaces and for the joint material. In the present work the interphase constitutive laws, taking into account the joint stiffness degradation and the onset of irreversible displacements, are derived in a thermodynamically consistent manner assuming an appropriate form of the Helmholtz free energy, function of the internal and contact joint strains and of other internal variables which regulate the evolution of the non-linear phenomena.The interphase model has been implemented in an open-source research-oriented finite element analysis program for 2D applications.

Diagonal Tension Testing of Interlocking Compressed Earth Block Panels

This thesis examines the use of diagonal tension (shear) testing to determine factors affecting shear strength of Interlocking Compressed Earth Block (ICEB) panels. This work expands on the current information available about strength properties of ICEB assemblies, which are dry-stacked, as opposed to having mortared beds. Variables such as block strength, grout strength and grouting pattern can influence the results of these types of tests and are examined in this investigation.To study variables affecting diagonal shear strength, 9 panels were tested, consisting of blocks produced by a manual block press. Strength testing was adopted from common ASTM standards to determine constituent material properties. A modified version of ASTM E519 test procedure is used to perform diagonal tension testing. Imaging analysis, using a high resolution camera, was run simultaneously during testing to capture displacement histories of select panels.It was determined that both block and grout strength significantly affect the shear strength of ICEB panels. Additionally, vertical grouting and block type also have a strong influence. Imaging analysis results confirm that the dominant failure mode in ICEB panels is bed joint sliding both pre and post peak load, with noticeable displacements at head joint locations on a few panels. Lastly, diagonal cracking along the block face was noticeable on several panels following peak load. Further testing remains to determine other factors affecting shear strength, namely, the application of normal pre-compression loads to the panel.

Code design of Unreinforced Masonry (URM) buildings is based on elastic analysis, which requires as input parameter the effective stiffness of URM walls. Current approaches estimate the effective stiffness as fixed ratio of the gross sectional stiffness but comparisons with experimental results have shown that this does not yield satisfactory predictions. In this paper, a recently developed analytical model for the force-displacement response of URM walls is used to investigate the effective stiffness. First, the key features of this model are summarised. In further course, the model is used to predict the effective stiffness of full-scale tests on modern unreinforced clay brick masonry walls and the results are compared to the provisions of Eurocode 8.
