Rose black spot caused by Diplocarpon rosae is the most severe and global disease of garden roses. Breeding of disease resistant varieties is one of the most important goals of modern garden rose breeding. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are the most abundant type of polymorphism found in eukaryotic genomes. SNP markers can be used in a wide variety of applications, including association studies, genetic diversity analysis, and marker-assisted selection in plant breeding programs. The aim of this project was to analyze black spot resistance in a rose association panel through leaf inoculation assays with single isolate pathotypes as well as a field mixture of D. rosae isolates and to establish a relationship between resistance and the available SNP markers. In this study, 96 diverse cultivars of roses were evaluated phenotypically for resistance against black spot through artificial inoculations. 63000 SNPs that were developed in previous studies were used to genetically analyze the cultivars and find associations with resistance against black spot disease using mixed linear model in TASSEL 3.0. Differences in the phenotypic reaction to field mixture of isolates and the Ab13 single conidial isolate of this pathogen were observed between genotypes. One hundred and forty-nine SNPs were found to be significantly associated with resistance against field mixtures of black spot. For the Ab13 single isolate, only one significant SNP was found. These SNPs were mapped on the rose chromosomes, and found on chromosome one, three and four. These associated SNP and Rdr1 markers can be used for marker-assisted selection in breeding for black spot resistance in rose.

Potato is commercially important vegetable crop in hills of Uttarakhand and grown as an off season. Farmer’s get remunerative return of their potato because of the off season. It was observed that incidence of late blight disease hampered the production and majority of the farmers used mancozeb fungicide which did not provide expected relief from the menace of late blight disease. Accordingly, interventions were made on combination of fungicides to find out their field efficacy against late blight disease of potato on farmer’s field. The result of the experimentation revealed that two spraying of azoxystrobin + tebuconazole @1 ml/litre of water at moderate severity stage of late blight disease proved to be most effective treatment on reduction of incidence, increase in yield and net income over all other treatments in all the three consecutive years. The T3 has been investigated as best treatment in all the respects among various treatments. The summary of the investigation advocates that two spraying of modern combination of fungicides namely, azoxystrobin + tebuconazole even at moderate severity stage of late blight disease gave tremendous impact on its management throughout the crop season. Considering its impact of three years investigation against late blight disease in off season potato, this novel combination of fungicide may be recommended to the farmer's of the country.

Harnessing Soil Diversity: Innovative Strategies for Potato Blight Management in Central-Eastern Poland

Faced with increasing climate challenges, this pioneering study introduces groundbreaking approaches to ensure the resilience of potato crops in east-central Poland. Our research was aimed at developing an innovative, cost-effective system tailored to the diverse local conditions of this region. Conducted between 2018 and 2020, the study analyzed integrated and organic production systems across different soil types and potato varieties. The experiment was conducted using a randomized block design with three replications in two locations. Integrated production systems involve the strategic use of mineral fertilization and chemical protection to optimize crop growth and health, whereas organic production systems rely solely on natural inputs and biological pest control methods. Integrated practices, enhanced by mineral fertilization and chemical protection, notably delayed the onset of late blight by 16 days and extended the critical infection period by 17% compared to their organic counterparts. Remarkably, the integrated systems resulted in a 49% increase in total production and a 52% increase in commercial yields, demonstrating their effectiveness in enhancing crop resilience. Different potato varieties exhibit varied responses to cultivation systems, influencing both yield and disease resistance. Further investigation into these varietal responses can help optimize cultivation practices, leading to improved efficiency and sustainability in potato farming. Location and soil conditions have a significant impact on potato yield and the spread of potato blight. Specific soil properties such as pH levels, organic matter content, soil texture (clay, silt, and sand composition), moisture retention capacity, and nutrient availability are crucial in determining potato productivity and disease dynamics. Further research into these soil properties and the adaptation of varieties to local conditions can contribute to increased productivity and stability in potato production. This study not only paves the way toward sustainable agriculture but also highlights the crucial role of soil diversity in shaping resilient farming practices. Potato producers in the eastern-central region of Poland should implement integrated production systems using mineral fertilization and chemical plant protection, adapted to local soil conditions and potato varieties. These practices can delay the appearance of late blight and increase the total and marketable potato yield. Further research on soil properties and variety adaptation may increase production stability and efficiency. Promoting soil diversity and modern technologies will ensure resilient and sustainable agricultural production in the face of climate change.
