Response of feline intradental nerve fibers to tooth cutting by Er:YAG laser

Abstract: During the tooth cutting, Er:YAG laser was more effective in activating intradental A-fibers compared with micromotor and also caused the activation of intradental C-fibers.

“…The Er:YAG laser has been an effective replacement to conventional handpieces for cavity preparation (Attrill et al, 2004; Hibst, 2002), tooth surface treatment (Aranha et al, 2007; Visuri et al, 1996), restorative materials removal (Corrêa‐Afonso et al, 2008; Lizarelli et al, 2003), on the root‐canal walls (Khabbaz et al, 2004), and caries removal (Dommisch et al, 2008; Jacobsen et al, 2011; Raucci‐Neto et al, 2011). This equipment also presents the advantage of being more comfortable for the patient and in many cases can eliminate the necessity of anesthesia (Chaiyavej et al, 2000; Parker, 2007). …”

“…7 Laser use also has significant advantages over the use of a high-speed bur, such as reduction of noise, pressure, and vibration, 8,9 and the possibility of treatment without anesthesia. 10 Moreover, some studies 11,12 have reported that the use of the laser may prevent the development of caries in the dentin.…”

“…Keller et al reported that fewer patients requested local anesthesia during cavity preparation using the Er:YAG laser than during cavity preparation using rotary cutting instruments [21]. However, Chaiyavei et al reported from a study in feline incisors that tooth preparation using Er:YAG laser irradiation may induce nerve responses of the same or even greater level than those observed with use of low-speed micromotors [22]. Further research is anticipated regarding nerve responses during cavity preparation using the Er:YAG laser.…”
