Response of False Broomweed (Ericameria austrotexana) and Associated Herbaceous Vegetation to Pelleted Herbicides

Abstract: Aerial applications of pelleted tebuthiuron (N-[5-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl]-N, N′-dimethylurea} at 1 kg/ha to rangeland reduced canopy cover of the subshrub false broomweed (Ericameria austrotexanaM.C. Johnst.) by 69 to 78%. Complete control was obtained with 2 kg/ha of tebuthiuron. Picloram (4-amino-3,5,6-trichloropicolinic acid) pellets applied at 2 kg/ha controlled false broomweed in two of four experiments; effectiveness of soil-applied picloram appeared to depend upon sufficient rainfall … Show more

“…It has narrow dark green leaves, an erectophile (erect-leaf) canopy structure, and an average height of about 1 m (4,16). The plant occurs on welldrained clay and clay loam soils where the vegetation has been disturbed by chemical or mechanical treat ments (14,16).…”

“…Foliar herbi cide sprays and prescribed burning are not effective in controlling false broomweed infestations (IS,16). The shrub has been controlled only by intensive mechanical treatments or expensive applications of soil-applied her bicides (14). Early detection and accurate mapping of false broomweed infestations will reduce the amount of time and resources needed to control the spread of the shrub.…”

“…Satellite imagery has also been used to detect large weed infestations on rangelands (27). (15,18,19,20). False broomweed and spiny aster are native perennial subshrubs that invade Texas rangelands, often forming dense stands that eliminate forage production on sub stantial areas (19,20).…”

“…It is available as a liquid and also has been formu lated as extruded pellets made with inert clay. Pellets about 4 mm diam containing 10% ai have been com pared to 5% pellets averaging 2.5 mm diam to control several perennial weeds and woody brush species, but size and picloram content of pellets generally have not influenced their effectiveness (7,8,9,12,13,16). These studies suggested that more active ingredient must be applied as pellets than as sprays to control range weeds.…”
