Bathymetric changes have been observed over the years in the Chókwè irrigation scheme (CIS) and little is known about their cause. This study assessed bathymetric variations that have occurred since 2001, when the scheme was last rehabilitated. The bathymetry of canal beds and banks was analysed using GPS‐Rover surveying equipment to determine cross‐section and longitudinal profiles. Water level measurements were performed using staff gauges at nine different sampling stations. Data sets for 2001, 2016 and 2019 were considered. Canal depth changes were captured, and density plots generated. Bathymetric changes of cross‐sectional and longitudinal profiles, slope trend analysis models, canal depth changes and water depth variation, were assessed. Results suggest cross‐sectional and longitudinal bathymetric profiles are affected by sediment accumulation. The depths of canal beds varied from 0.5 to 2.0 m over a span of more than 80 km. Trend analysis models indicated good accuracy for fits in all three reaches in 2001, 2016 and 2019. The forecast accuracy predictors MAPE, MAD and MSD were all found to have minimal values within the acceptable range of 1 and 3 for all the years and sectors. The water depth in the canal showed considerable variation within and across each sampling point and station, varying from 3.5 to less than 1.2 m. These findings will play a significant role in the study of water flow and sedimentation processes in the CIS.

O papel dos processos gravitacionais na evolução geomorfológica de canais fluviais ainda é um tema com abordagem escassa na literatura nacional. Um exemplo desse processo é observado no rio Jacareí (litoral do Paraná), que em março de 2011 foi afetado por intensas corridas de lama e detritos. Objetiva-se analisar a evolução geomorfológica do rio Jacareí frente as mudanças impostas pelos processos gravitacionais de 2011 e intervenções antrópicas realizadas antes e após o evento de 2011. Foram utilizadas fotografias aéreas e imagens orbitais (1953-2019) em ambiente SIG para análise da morfologia do canal e cálculo de variáveis referentes à morfometria e à morfodinâmica. O rio Jacareí apresenta transformações geomorfológicas desde 1953, com progressiva perda de extensão e sinuosidade e oscilação entre padrão reto e sinuoso, causadas por intervenções antrópicas. O evento de 2011 impôs padrão anastomosado em parte do rio Jacareí. Com a reabertura do canal por maquinário (retorno ao padrão reto) ainda em 2011, o rio Jacareí foi progressivamente se ajustando a nova configuração de paisagem, apresentando maiores taxas de migração lateral média em comparação ao período anterior a 2011. Os resultados reforçam a ideia de resiliência fluvial da área. Nesse sentido, o trabalho apresenta recomendações para a continuidade da pesquisa.

Four profiles in different sedimentary environments - natural levee, proximal floodplain, distal floodplain, oxbow lake - were sampled to obtain magnetic susceptibility (MS), grain size, organic matter content (LOI) and pH. Relationships between selected parameters (χlf, D50, LOI, pH) were analysed by means of statistical analysis (linear regression, PCA, factor analysis). Principal goal was to investigate how character of individual sedimentary environments and their distance from the active river channel is reflected in the magnetic signal of overbank deposits. A decrease in the magnetic signal with increasing distance from the river channel was shown, confirming that fluvial deposition is a major factor of contamination of floodplain sediments by anthropogenic magnetic particles. The base of elevated values of MS (levee: 80 cm, proximal floodplain: 30 cm) probably corresponds to the turn of the 19th and 20th century and the strongest magnetic signal (levee: 32,5 cm, proximal floodplain: 5 cm) belongs to the 1980s. Statistically significant relationships were found between: χlf and LOI (direct dependence), LOI and D50 (indirect dependence), pH and D50 (direct dependence) when data from all profiles were analysed together.
