Efficient Computation of Multiscale Entropy over Short Biomedical Time Series Based on Linear State-Space Models

The most common approach to assess the dynamical complexity of a time series across multiple temporal scales makes use of the multiscale entropy (MSE) and refined MSE (RMSE) measures. In spite of their popularity, MSE and RMSE lack an analytical framework allowing their calculation for known dynamic processes and cannot be reliably computed over short time series. To overcome these limitations, we propose a method to assess RMSE for autoregressive (AR) stochastic processes. The method makes use of linear state-space (SS) models to provide the multiscale parametric representation of an AR process observed at different time scales and exploits the SS parameters to quantify analytically the complexity of the process. The resulting linear MSE (LMSE) measure is first tested in simulations, both theoretically to relate the multiscale complexity of AR processes to their dynamical properties and over short process realizations to assess its computational reliability in comparison with RMSE. Then, it is applied to the time series of heart period, arterial pressure, and respiration measured for healthy subjects monitored in resting conditions and during physiological stress. This application to short-term cardiovascular variability documents that LMSE can describe better than RMSE the activity of physiological mechanisms producing biological oscillations at different temporal scales.

The global population of clouded leopards (Neofelis nebulosa) is considered vulnerable worldwide [1], and were considered to be less abundant globally the 2016 assessment by the IUCN than the previous assessment in 2007 [1]. Clouded leopards currently range from the southeastern Himalayas across southeastern Asia, extending through southern China and into peninsular Malaysia [2-6] (Figure 1). They have been extirpated from Taiwan [7], and possibly from Bangladesh [1]. Clouded leopards are protected in most countries across their range [1], but a large reason for population declines is unregulated hunting for pelts [1,8], as well as habitat fragmentation and regional declines in habitat quality [1].Clouded leopards may be expanding their range recently in the southeastern Himalayas. Clouded leopards were historically found in Nepal [9], but were thought to have become extinct in the last century. They were rediscovered in the 1980's [5], and have now been documented as far west as Annapurna in central Nepal [10]. Similarly, clouded leopards were historically found in India and may have been common [11]. They are now much less common, and were documented for the first time in decades in the northeastern state of Mizoram [12], and were also detected during multiple surveys during recent decades in the northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh [13,14], and Assam [15]. Future studies to document and confirm the global and local ranges of clouded leopards are important in order to set realistic and appropriate conservation goals. It is possible that the range is both expanding and contracting in different areas, making local conservation needs potentially different than those for the species as a whole. The expansions of the ranges of clouded leopards in the past few decades in Nepal and India [5,10,[12][13][14], are encouraging. Although reintroductions are often difficult, because clouded leopards are naturally recolonizing areas it is possible that reintroduction efforts could also be successful. The causes of the original extirpation in the area need to be addressed and the long-term viability of the population considered before any reintroductions efforts begin.

Introduction: Most evidence-supported treatments for psychiatric problems teach clients skills to incorporate into their daily lives. Yet little research rigorously examines the extent to which individuals absorb these strategies and can competently apply them outside of the therapeutic relationship.Objectives: The current study examined the degree to which self-injuring adolescents and their mothers (n = 30 dyads) and typical control mother-daughter dyads (n = 30) were able to utilize a multicomponent interpersonal validation-oriented skill from dialectical behavior therapy, after a single teaching. We also aimed to assess whether variance in Gentle, Interested, Validate, and Easy (GIVE) skill practice was associated with a physiological index of emotion regulation (respiratory sinus arrhythmia [RSA]).Method: An observational coding system was developed to measure skill-related behavior across four key domains (be [ing] gentle, act[ing] interested, validation, and us[ing] an easy manner; GIVE) and applied during two family conflict discussions (pre-and postskills training). Mother and adolescent RSA data were collected at rest and across discussion tasks. Results: Behavioral indicators of skill use improved pre-topost skills training across the entire sample, except in one GIVE domain (easy manner). Self-injuring youth and their mothers demonstrated greater improvements than control
