Purpose: Strategic leadership is capability of the leadership to keep on reinventing motives for the organization’s sustained presence. The leader must have the ability to focus on the organization’s operational activities and at the same time monitor the changes that affect the organization, both internally and externally. Such changes are bound to determine the existence of the organization in the future and they are prospects to grow the firm. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the influence of strategic leadership on financial sustainability of NGOs in Kenya. Methodology: A desktop literature review was used for this purpose. Relevant seminal references and journal articles for the study were identified using Google Scholar. The inclusion criteria entailed papers that were not over 10 years old. Findings: Strategic leadership requires expertise in managing both internal and external business environment and engage in a complex information processing. Strategic leadership is not only concerned with the possession of unique abilities that allows for the absorption and learning of new information and ideas, but having the adaptive capacity to appropriately respond to the dynamism and complexity of the external environment. Strategic leadership actions significantly influence performance. The study concludes that there is a positive relationship between the use of strategic planning and organizational performance in today’s corporate environment. Unique Contribution to Theory, Policy and Practice: The researcher recommended that balanced organizational controls should be effectively applied to realize good performance. The findings also recommended NGOs leaders should use the strategic leadership well since they are likely to improve their organizational performance significantly.

Drawing on data from in-depth interviews with twenty-one founder-CEOs of social work organisations (SWOs) in Mainland China, this article develops the concept of ‘strategic resource mobilisation’ and investigates how founder-CEOs’ professional backgrounds influence their mobilisation of resources in three areas—funding, human resources and government relations. We find that founder-CEOs adopt different strategies in mobilising resources, presenting distinct advantages and disadvantages according to their professional background. In particular, founder-CEOs affiliated with universities are viewed with trust and respect by the government and have social work students as human resources but report a lack of management skills; founder-CEOs from a business background have wider access to financial support and make good use of their management experiences and skills but are challenged by frontline social workers; and founder-CEOs with prior government experience rely on connections with officials to secure funding but face greater administrative constraints. The findings provide valuable insights for SWO executives to better assess their organisational capacity, leadership and management. The research further suggests that, to ensure the sustainable development of SWOs in Mainland China, government policies could be introduced to help diversify the funding sources, and efforts should be made to improve the partnership between the government and SWOs.

Cette recherche étudie le cas d’une commune rurale malgache, la commune d’Imerintsiatosika, qui a mis en œuvre une démarche collective pour mener à terme un ensemble de projets d’investissements publics. Le cadre conceptuel de l’étude s’appuie sur le concept de performance collective et individuelle, la théorie de l’effectuation et la mobilisation des ressources par les entrepreneurs classique et politique. Les résultats montrent que les déterminants de cette performance collective sont liés à la performance individuelle et aux caractéristiques individuelles (notamment son système de valeurs) du maire-entrepreneur, l’attachement de la population à la culture malgache du Fihavanana matérialisée par le tolon-tanana . En faisant preuve d’intelligence financière, d’adaptabilité sociale, de capacité de persuasion et de narration, d’expressivité, d’intelligence émotionnelle et de management de l’impression, le maire-entrepreneur a réussi à concrétiser sa stratégie de mobilisation de ressources locales.
