Resource Allocation for Visible Light Communication Systems Using Simulated Annealing Based on a Problem-Specific Neighbor Function

Abstract: In this paper, we consider a visible light communication (VLC) system with direct currentbiased orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DC-OFDM) and investigate resource allocation for a multi-user environment. Based on the user satisfaction index as a function of data rate, we aim to optimally determine the allocation of the users to different LEDs (acting as access points) and OFDM subcarriers. We propose a simulated annealing-based heuristic to maximize the average user satisfaction index. In an effort … Show more

“…A non-convex optimization problem has many local minima and it is hard to determine the globally optimal solution [14], [24], [2]. Different methods such as evolutionary algorithm (EA) [25], [26], [27], [28], monotonic optimization [2], DRL [2], etc., can be applied to solve them.…”

“…We also implemented two well-known optimization metaheuristic algorithms: (i) SA algorithm; and, (ii) TS algorithm [20] to benchmark the performance of the proposed model. Both of these metaheuristic algorithms have successfully solved different optimization problems in the VLC systems [13], [12], [10]. The results of the TS algorithm are significantly better than the SA algorithm and are used as target values, (∆ Q ), to be reached by the proposed model.…”

“…VLC has emerged as a promising alternative for next-generation wireless networks (5G and beyond), due to its high data rate, flexible coverage, and free from radio frequency (RF) interference [1][2][3]. VLC uses light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to transmit data by modulating the intensity of visible light and can be used as complimentary wireless access technology to WiFi and cellular systems [4][5]. However, the VLC systems suffer from service disruptions due to the limited coverage of light, and it also easy to be blocked due to misalignment or path obstruction.…”
