In this work, is presented the fabrication and characterization of optical fiber refractometer based on lossy mode resonances (LMR). Indium-Tin-Oxide (ITO) and Tin Dioxide (SnO2) thin films deposited on optical fibers are used as the LMR supporting coatings. These resonances shift to the red as a function of the external refractive index. The refractometer has been used to characterize the degradation of a synthetic industrial gear lubricant oil at working temperature.

An optical fiber sensor using an aptamer receptor has been developed for the detection of thrombin. The sensitive coating consists of an aptamer-polymer structure fabricated using the layer-by-layer electrostatic self assembly technique onto novel optical fiber refractometers based on lossy mode resonances (LMRs). LMR based refractometers enable to overcome the traditional drawbacks of surface Plasmon resonance (SPR) based devices, such as the utilization of polarized light for example. The refractometer is based on an indium tin oxide thin layer deposited by DC-sputtering onto the cladding removed multimode fiber. These refractometers enable to monitor the variations of the surrounding medium refractive index (RI). Hence, RI variations of the outer film induced by thrombin can be referenced to the LMR wavelength shift. The described configuration has enabled the detection of low concentrations of thrombin (100nM) as well as obtaining a maximum wavelength shift of 50 nm at higher (1µM) concentrations.

Plastic optical fibers (POF) have several advantages over the conventional glass optical fibers (GOF), such as flexibility and transfer of visible lights. For information delivery, various IT devices can be interconnected into or onto the fabric. For aesthetic value, fabric can be active light emission device using optical fiber. In this work, we propose a light emission fabric which contains optical fiber structure with the external clad layer removed using mechanical or chemical method. POF was embedded into plain weave structure and the light scattering phenomenon was measured quantitatively by specially designed 3D printed jig using google SketchUp software. Various light frequency including 405nm, 455nm, 530nm and 627 nm tested because visible and UV lights were of our concern. Thermal and mechanical force were used for the clad removal respectively and the removal status was measured using microscope. Light scattering was stronger in clad-removed fibers, especially 5 times in 455 nm.
