Resolving the Dilemma of International School Curriculum: The Case of Biology

Abstract: The purpose of the current study is to explore the predictors of the Diploma Program scores in biology to resolve the dilemma regarding which international school curriculum is better to prepare students for the Diploma Program. A purposive sample of 135 high school students was drawn from a private international school in Turkey. Data was analyzed with a multiple regression approach. A statistically significant and relatively strong relationship was found between the Diploma Program scores in biology and the … Show more

“…As the oldest of the international programs, DP has established itself as the premium university preparatory curriculum for students in Grades 11 and 12 (Hayden, 2006). Schools need to give a critical decision on the program that would best prepare students for rigor of the DP (Corlu, 2014;Sagun & Corlu, 2014). The decision of many schools to choose IGCSE seems to be arbitrary because the body of literature providing evidence for selecting IGCSE as a well-established DP preparatory curriculum is scarce.…”

“…In addition, this study also indicated that compared to the non-MYP students, MYP students rated higher in international and civic-mindedness as well as global awareness (Sizmur & Cunningham, 2013). Nevertheless, there is little empirical research to support the assertion that either MYP or IGCSE is a good foundation as a DP-preparatory program (Corlu, 2014;Sagun & Corlu, 2014;Yağız et al, 2016).…”

“…Few studies on IGCSE and DP indicated that the IGCSE provides foundational preparation for the DP. One study revealed that there was a statistically significant and relatively strong correlation between IBDP and IGCSE student performances in science and math external examination scores (Corlu, 2014;Sagun & Corlu, 2014;Yağız et al, 2016). IGCSE is also considered to provide reliable benchmarks and prediction of success in the IBDP and prepare students for the DP (Nashman-Smith & Taylor, 2004).…”

“…Regarding IGCSE, Monteath (2015) reports that because of its international focus, there are an increasing number of schools that desire to implement IGCSE. Sagun and Çorlu (2014) notes that the IGCSE has an exam that may be good practice for IBDP exams. In 2014, Sagun and Çorlu compared MYP and IGCSE experience on students' IBDP science course and did not find a significant difference between the programmes.…”
