Resolving the clinical acuity categories “hand motion” and “counting fingers” using the Freiburg Visual Acuity Test (FrACT)

Abstract: FrACT can reproducibly quantify VA in the CF and HM range. We observed a floor effect for LP, and it was not quantifiable further. Quantitative VA measures are thus obtainable in the very low-vision range using FrACT.

“…This conversion allows the use of parametric tests, and has been previously validated. 16 In conclusion, this study shows that small-gauge vitrectomy with subretinal rtPA and ranibizumab is an effective therapy for improving visual acuity in patients with submacular haemorrhages secondary to nAMD. Small haemorrhage area and prompt surgery are associated with better final visual acuity.…”

“…Snellen visual acuity was transformed to LogMAR for statistical analysis. 16 Differences between two related continuous variables were tested with the paired T-test, and between two independent variables with the independent samples T-tests, when normality and homoscedasticity conditions allowed it. When this was not possible, Wilcoxon or Mann-Whitney test were used, respectively.…”

“…Count fingers visual acuity was allocated a LogMAR value of 1.98 and hand movement visual acuity a value of 2.28. 18 Size of macular haemorrhage was measured from colour fundal photographs using ImageJ software (http://imagej.nih.gov). In some cases, haemorrhage extended beyond the area captured in photographs and hence the value stated may underestimate the true size.…”

“…Analysis for eyes with low visual acuity was undertaken by substituting counting fingers and hand movement with 2.0 and 2.3 logMAR. 10 Vitreous haze was measured from 0 to 4+ according to Standardization of Uveitis Nomenclature (SUN). DEX-intravitreal implant was administered in a surgery room after obtaining informed consent.…”
