Resolving Conflicts between Agriculture and the Natural Environment

Abstract: Agriculture dominates the planet. Yet it has many environmental costs that are unsustainable, especially as global food demand rises. Here, we evaluate ways in which different parts of the world are succeeding in their attempts to resolve conflict between agriculture and wild nature. We envision that coordinated global action in conserving land most sensitive to agricultural activities and policies that internalise the environmental costs of agriculture are needed to deliver a more sustainable future.

“…Voluntary (including incentive-based) programs can support motivated producers to steward their land, while regulations provide broader protection, but potentially less efficiently; combining these can both "crowd in" producers that are already interested in environmentally conscious land management and create hard limits within which all producers must operate. For example, China has taken the approach to strictly regulate pollution from large agri-business while offering incentives and support to small producers to accomplish environmental goals while maintaining rural lifestyles and cultures [159,160]. Voluntary programs like conservation easement purchase programs can be effective when landowner and conservation priorities naturally align.…”

“…Worldwide, actors from different worlds come into conflict over the use of arable/natural space, and the environmental impacts of the dominant farming model can no longer be denied (Tanentzap et al 2015). Will negotiating and defining new forms of governance be enough to untangle such complex issues?…”

“…However, the bad news is that, of all the crops cultivated on a large scale, viticulture is the biggest pesticide consumer per acreage (Phytowelt GmbH for the European Commission 2003). As for all agriculture, evidence of significant harm to the environment is highlighted more and more (Foley et al 2011;Tanentzap et al 2015). Criticism of conventional viticulture has even gone as far as the law courts, when injuries to human health can be proven.…”

“…The conversion of natural environments into agricultural areas (TANENTZAP et al, 2015) has led to a growing concern about the impacts on biological communities caused by monocultures, habitat fragmentation and pesticide use (GALINDO-LEAL;CÂMARA, 2003;EDWARDS et al, 2014). However, little is known about the impacts of conventional agricultural crops on the richness and abundance of organisms inhabiting directly affected areas.…”
