Resolved and unresolved bioethical authenticity problems

Abstract: Respect for autonomy is a central moral principle in bioethics. It is sometimes argued that authenticity, i.e., being "real," "genuine," "true to oneself," or similar, is crucial to a person's autonomy. Patients sometimes make what appears to be inauthentic decisions, such as when (decision-competent) anorexia nervosa patients refuse treatment to avoid gaining weight, despite that the risk of harm is very high. If such decisions are inauthentic, and therefore non-autonomous, it may be the case they should be o… Show more

“…Although researchers did not universally use the term "authentication," sociologists, anthropologists, philosophers, and ethicists have empirically demonstrated the presence of divergent types of authentication in cultural industries (Roeland et al, 2011;Rutten, 2019), cosmetic surgery transitions (Weiss & Kukla, 2009;Gimlin, 2013), life-style and marketing discourses (Rose & Wood, 2005;Chalmers & Price, 2009;Houtman et al, 2010;O'Neillet al, 2014;Houtman et al, 2016), personalized healthcare (Sharon, 2017), bio-ethical debates on human enhancement technologies (Bolt, 2007;Marceta, 2020;Parens, 2005), and AI-generated art (Floridi, 2018). Authenticity has become such a binding value and dominant norm in Western societies (Aupers et al, 2010) that the way people talk about what constitutes the (in)authentic may say more about the authenticity conceptions available in everyday language, than how people truly feel or think about what constitutes the (in)authentic.…”

“…Despite its importance, the concept of DMC remains controversial. Issues such as how emotions affect DMC (Charland, 1998), whether the ability to value is relevant to DMC (Kim, 2010), how authenticity should play a role (den Hartogh, 2016;Ahlin Marceta, 2020), and the role of voluntariness have all inspired debate (Charland, 2002). A recent narrative review explores the role of emotions and values, and highlights the complexity and lack of consensus (Hermann et al, 2016).…”

“…Маркета (Королевский технологический институт, Швеция) подчеркивает, что уважение к свободе -центральный моральный принцип биоэтики. «Быть свободным -значит быть самоуправляемым» [Marceta, 2020]. Если пациент не способен принимать решения, касающиеся его здоровья, или если он/она не принимает медицинских решений независимо от внешних факторов влияния, таких как социальное или экономическое давление, это отрицательно влияет на степень независимости принятия решений.…”
