Resistivity Minima in Y-Stabilized ß-Ce Alloys Impurity Effects

Abstract

Minima in the resistivity—temperature curves for the d.h.c.p. alloy Ce16 at%Y were induced by the addition of 5 or 10 at% of Sc, Lu, or Pu. The minima presumably result from an enhancement of the Kondo‐type scattering thought to exist in Y‐stabilized β‐Ce alloys but which at the 16 at%Y concentration, in the binary alloys, is apparently not strong enough to produce a resistivity minimum. The enhancement of the scattering caused by the addition of impurities is interpreted as being due to 1) a decrease in the overall Ce concentration in the alloy and 2) an impurity‐induced increase in the effective internal pressure on the Ce atoms in the alloy.
