Resistance within wheat, barley and oat cultivars to Heterodera avenae in South Australia

Abstract: Resistance of 800 wheat, 83 oat, and 36 barley cultivars to the cereal cyst nematode, Heterodera avenae, was tested in South Australia. A wide range of reactions of selected cultivars, assessed by numbers of females produced on the roots, was obtained for each of the cereals with populations of the nematode from two sites. Good resistance was recorded in only two wheat cultivars; Spring wheat (AUS No. 10894) showed moderate resistance in all tests and Loros (AUS No. 90248), although recorded as susceptible in … Show more

“…O'BRIEN (1972) reported that the introduction AUS 10894 appeared resistant in South Australia, and BROWN (1974) has confirmed that both AUS 10894 and another introduction, AUS 11577, possess a comparatively high, though not absolute, resistance to female cyst development, combined with good root growth despite nematode invasion, when tested against nematodes from 17 different areas of the Victorian wheat belt. The AUS 11577 resistance source was traced to an introduction of cv.…”

“…Two trials to evaluate resistance were eonducted near Pullman and Colton, WA during 2011 and 2012, respectively. The design, similar to that described by O'Brien and Fisher (34), was a randomized complete block design with eight blocks. In 2011, 24 cultivars were evaluated, including 9 PNW eultivars, 13 entries from the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT; Ankara, Turkey), and an Iranian landrace wheat (AUS2845!)…”

“…Loros (Nielsen, 1966) proved to be susceptible in our tests. However, it was discovered later (Brown, I974 ;O'Brien & Fisher, 1974) that several lines of LoIos are accessioned in the Australian Wheat Collection, and two of them (AIJS" 11577 and AUS 90248) are in fact resistant, while the other lines are susceptible.…”
