Resistance to biotic and abiotic stress in potato: the origin of the genes and corresponding molecular markers

Saiful Islam,
Jiana Li,
Mohammad Ataur Rahman
et al.

Abstract: The integration of molecular markers in the realm of potato genetics has opened new avenues for accelerating genotype analysis and developing improved varieties. Many markers linked to important features have been discovered so far and are consistently distributed across 12 chromosomes (× = 12) of potato. Notably, the genes allied to disease resistance stand out as significant and prevalent. Molecular markers associated with these genes have revolutionized selection processes, making them faster and more effec… Show more

“…In recent years, molecular markers have been used in the agronomic sciences as powerful tools for analysing genetic variation, as they efficiently link phenotypic and genotypic variation [ 56 ]. In potato, molecular markers are used in studies on cultivar identification [ 57 ], genotype characterization and genetic diversity [ 58 , 59 ], resistance to biotic and abiotic stress [ 60 ], pathogen resistance [ 61 , 62 ], and trait mapping [ 63 ]. This technique has significantly accelerated the breeding process [ 56 ], because it allows for the identification of resistant plants at an early stage, enabling faster and more targeted breeding programs [ 64 ].…”

“…Alternatively, biotechnological tools like somatic hybridization and DNA recombinant technologies can also be employed. Both approaches can significantly benefit from marker-assisted selection [ 60 , 165 ].…”
