Resistance of Sesbania accessions to Mesoplatys ochroptera Stål (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae)

Abstract: The defoliating beetle Mesoplatys ochroptera Stal (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) has become a serious pest of the tropical legume Sesbania sesban (L.) Merrill in agroforestry systems in eastern and southern African countries. In this study, 32 accessions of Sesbania spp. collected from eastern and southern Africa were screened for resistance to M. ochroptera at Msekera, Zambia. Two mechanisms of resistance-antixenosis and antibiosis-were indicated in the different accessions. Accessions of Sesbania bispinosa, S. … Show more

“…Low-density markers, including randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers, have been used to study the genetic relationship between Sesbania sesban accessions [ 5 , 9 ]. Variation in yield performance and insect resistance of accessions from the collection have also been reported [ 10 , 11 ]. More recently, although not yet used for diversity analysis, next-generation sequence-based expressed sequence tag-simple sequence repeat (EST-SSR) markers have been developed by transcriptome sequencing [ 12 ].…”
