“…PET and PMMA have been widely used for dental treatment in prosthodontics, orthodontics, oral surgery, and temporomandibular joint clinics. The introduction of these materials for use in the oral cavity provides more surfaces for bacterial adhesion and alters biofilm distribution when compared with non‐appliance wearers, leading to many biofilm‐related side effects (Rego et al ., ; Schaefer and Braumann, ; Bertolini et al ., ). Thus, the microbial implications of the two materials are of clinical importance.…”

“…Rougher surfaces usually attract more bacterial adhesion (Taylor et al ., ; Kawai et al ., ; Mei et al ., ,, ); however, the PMMA surfaces, which were rougher and more hydrophobic in the study, had less bacterial adhesion than the PET surfaces. This might due to the different chemical composition and functional groups of the two materials (Goldberg and Burstone, ; Zhang et al ., ; Gautam et al ., ; Etxeberria et al ., ; Bertolini et al ., ; Zafar and Ahmed, ). Further studies on the cause of this difference are needed.…”
