“…The above reports of mothers corroborate the findings of other investigations, which believe that such mothers may be a vulnerable group to develop mental health problems, such as depression, stress and anxiety (Kuper et al, 2019;Ornelas Pereira et al, 2020;Santos, Tavares, et al, 2021;Squiers et al, 2021). Such symptoms may be related to these mothers' uncertainties and challenges regarding their children, their journeys, a worse perception of personal competence, triggering psychological distress and worse quality of life in mothers of children with microcephaly (Santos, Tavares, et al, 2021;Squiers et al, 2021), as we found in this study.…”

“…Taking care of a child with neurological disorders, in addition to domestic responsibilities, increases marital and financial difficulties and predisposes these mothers to social isolation, reducing their time to perform personal care and leisure. Therefore, the appearance of depressive symptoms, psychiatric disorders, anxiety and high levels of stress is common, which can impair quality of life (Braccialli et al, 2012; Bulhões et al, 2020; Costa et al, 2021; Romero‐Acosta et al, 2020; Santos et al, 2018; Santos, Ortoni, et al, 2021; Williams et al, 2021), trigger the emergence of muscle tensions and cause musculoskeletal pain in these women. In addition, it is noticed that there is a network of attention and care always focused on the child with microcephaly and its clinical condition, neglecting the health and well‐being of these mothers, predisposing them to have losses in personal, economic, professional and social fields (Campos et al, 2020; Menezes et al, 2019), which can negatively affect their physical and mental health.…”

“…Poor mental health in mothers of children with CZS may also be associated with the health demands and care of the child 4 , lack of social support 5 , 6 , changes in occupational roles 7 , and stigmatization of the disease 4 . A previous study found a relationship between increased levels of anxiety and lower levels of acceptance of self and life among these mothers 8 . In addition, the lack of health rehabilitation services, especially in the poorest regions, Constitutional Amendment 95 that reduces public investment in health, reformulations in social cash transfer programs, general impoverishment of the Brazilian population, increase in unemployment and inflation rates, and the emergence of the coronavirus disease-2019 pandemic are critical macrostructural factors that affect the living conditions of families and the care of children with disabilities.…”

“…Este fato leva a conflitos internos gerados por estressores intrapessoais e interpessoais que atingem o sistema familiar e causa instabilidade entre os membros. (18,19) O relato da mãe que permaneceu no emprego trouxe como aspecto negativo dessa decisão, a sobrecarga. Estudo mostrou que a saúde e a vida da mãe são as mais afetadas, pois a maioria delas assumem o trabalho doméstico, além de atender as necessidades da criança nas atividades da vida diária.…”
