Resilience in architecture: housing as a process

Abstract: This work starts with a hypothesis that housing design process can be an open system, whose resilience becomes positive when it is understood as a process with multiple agents, among one of them is the architect. Current housing production presents inadequacies and flexibility problems that bring this system to an unbalanced situation, which makes it more difficult for people to modify the space they live. This work aims to identify if and how the insertion of other architectural strategies in housing producti… Show more

“…The relationship between a residence and its surroundings, as well as between people and space is sometimes presented in stressful situations, such as changing plans to change spaces to accommodate new spaces, and even the need to relocate from an area due to a disaster or urban redevelopment. In that sense, the notion of resilience takes into account the ability of citizen groups to cope with collapse [4]. “…From this perspective we can identify the areas of spatial and constructive innovation that have reconfigured the panorama of contemporary collective housing. Studies on compact habitat, flexibility, or new typological models deserve special attention [21][22][23][24][25], but also academic works that evaluate the capacity of new technologies to intervene in design and production processes [26][27][28][29][30][31]. From this perspective, this article emphasizes typological studies and trends towards distributed dwellings heirs of the mat-building model defined by Alison Smithson [32,33].…”
