This study conducted qualitative interviews with nine immigrants on their experiences of public transit in Toronto. It synthesizes and builds on existing data that indicate that immigrants, especially women, highly depend on public transit despite settling in the peripheries of Toronto, away from subway lines and close to major highways. I identify gaps in existing academic and policy debates on transportation planning in Toronto and propose an environmental justice framework that is grounded in immigrants`experiences of navigating public transit and their spatial locations. The research findings highlight the limited affordability of public transit, the poor servicing and connectivity of bus networks, and the resulting barriers to accessing work opportunities across the region. I further analyze the role of the built environment in limiting or facilitating access for gendered activities such as grocery shopping and traveling with children. The paper concludes by highlighting the need for new directions in transit policy and planning that can better address the changing demographics and social and spatial divisions in the city.

This Masters Research Paper provides a critical analysis of the behavioural practices of immigration detention centres and how that affects the abilities of NGOs to support immigration detainees. This paper aims to identify the covert racism that is embedded within immigration detention centres in Canada, exploring how racialized detainees are susceptible to longer detention periods and mal-treatment due to increasing securitization. There will be focus on Ontario immigration detention centres in particular since many of Canada’s asylum claims and detention processes occur in Toronto and the greater Toronto area. This research fills the gap in directly addressing the impacts of racist practices of detention and how it impacts detainees’ ability to seek proper legal aid and interferes with NGOs abilities to aid detainees through their detention process. The methodology used begins with a theoretical framework using Critical Race Theory and background content on immigration detention centres, while drawing out the process of the criminalization of refugees. For this study there were one-on-on interviews conducted with 3 participants who are NGO representatives. Key words: immigration detention centre, detainees, national security, criminalization

Hvorfor bør boligforskere interessere seg for fortida?En diskusjon av fortida og historiefagets plass i boligforskningen i lys av en litteraturstudie Why should housing researchers care about the past? A discussion of the function of the past and the scholarly discipline of history in light of a literature review Jardar Sørvoll OsloMet -Storbyuniversitetet, SVA Senter for arbeids-og velferdsforskning, Velferdsforskningsinstituttet NOVA jarso@oslomet.no Sammendrag I denne artikkelen drøftes hvordan og hvorfor boligforskere bør bry seg med fortida og historiefaget, i lys av en litteraturstudie av tre internasjonale boligtidsskrifter. Det argumenteres for at sentrale eksempler hentet fra litteraturstudien viser fortida og historiefagets relevans for forklaringer og fortolkninger av samtidsfenomener i boligsektoren. Historiske perspektiver kan eksempelvis berike norske boligforskeres analyser av foreldrehjelp til førstegangsetablerere og mulighetene for etableringen av en tredje boligsektor i Oslo. Det siste illustrerer historiefagets relevans for selv den mest policyorienterte boligforskningen. Artikkelen bygger videre på tidligere faglige arbeider, men til forskjell fra mye av den relevante internasjonale faglitteraturen diskuteres også utfordringer knyttet til historiske perspektiver. Det argumenteres for at boligforskeres tilnaerminger til fortida ofte er problematiske sett fra et historiefaglig ståsted. Mange historisk orienterte boligforskere bryter med sentrale historiefaglige prinsipper som «naerhet til fortida», «idiografisk orientering» og «fortidsspor som byggeklosser». Begrenset bruk av klassisk historiefaglig empiri -som arkivmateriale, muntlige kilder og historisk statistikk -løftes videre fram som en generell svakhet ved den historisk orienterte boligforskningen. Artikkelen avrundes med å peke på fire funksjoner historiske analyser kan ha i boligforskningen: policyorientert kontekstualisering, perspektivberikende tolkning, årsaksforklaring og leverandør av råstoff til hypotese-og teoriutvikling. AbstractIn this article, I discuss how and why housing researchers should care about the past and the scholarly discipline of history in light of a literature review of three international housing journals. I argue that key examples from the literature review illustrate the relevance of history for the explanation and interpretation of contemporary phenomena in the housing sector. Historical perspectives may for instance strengthen Norwegian housing researchers' analysis of parental economic support to first-time buyers and the prospect of the establishment of a non-commercial housing sector in Oslo. The latter illustrates the relevance of history for even the most policy-oriented housing research. My article builds on previous studies, but focuses more on the challenges related to historical perspectives than what is typical in the relevant scholarly literature.
