Residual Stress Evaluation at Bone Implant Interfaces Using High Energy X-Ray Diffraction

Abstract: The present study is dedicated to high energy x-ray diffraction measurements of residual stress at bone-implant interfaces. Bone regeneration is different from soft tissue repair as scar formation never occurs and as de novo bone tissue is produced with proliferation and differentiation of mesenchymal cells. To start the bone remodelling, the stress – the most important mechanical factor – should stimulate the osteocytes. Osseointegration is also observed with non-functional implants, in particular with dental… Show more

“…Synchrotron microtomography, often in combination with digital volume correlation, has so far been used to analyse the deformation processes at the interface (Le Cann et al, 2019;Madi et al, 2020). Strains at the bone-implant interface have been investigated using synchrotron diffraction (Mireux et al, 2021). Combined information from a single specimen, Experimental protocol: the type of trigger and threshold need to be specified together with the type of X-ray measurement that will be triggered.…”

“…From the interfaces, the scan was carried out from 0 to 1 mm in 0.1. We took one measurement point very far from the interface (3mm) in order to have a reference [6].…”
