Residual Efficacy of Novaluron Applied on Concrete, Metal, and Wood for the Control of Stored Product Coleopteran Pests

Abstract: The residual efficacy of novaluron on concrete, metal and wood was evaluated against last-instar larvae of Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L.), Triboliumcastaneum (Herbst), and Trogoderma granarium Everts. The larvae and food provided for survival were exposed to surfaces pretreated at rates of 0.053, to 0.209 mg/m2 and bioassays were conducted from 0- to 16-weeks post-treatment. Percentage emergence of adults was recorded after 30 days (d). On all surfaces at week 0, no O. surinamensis or T.castaneum adults emerge… Show more

“…Both T. castaneum and R. dominica have evolved a complex system of glandular and volatile emissions, as well as odor-reception for dealing with crowded situations 10 , 68 . In support of this, we found the density volatile bouquets for both T. castaneum and R. dominica , were species-specific, and vary with the density of beetles.…”

“…As a species approaches its carrying capacity in an ecosystem, there may be several patterns that emerge. This may include an increase in avoidance behavior and decrease in joining behavior by individuals to a group 7 , differences in optimal foraging behavior 8 , changes in predation 9 , modulation of chemosensation 10 , as well as increasing intra- and interspecific competition 11 .…”

“…It is hard to provide an ecological assessment of this interference: the strongest interactions that may result in a phytophage's death or more or less noticeable behavioral reaction (oriented migration of an insect in the concentration gradient of a volatile organic compound) are studied better. Unfortunately, only some flavoring substances used in the household have been tested against insects that live in house-holds (Wright, 1966;Daglish et al, 2018;Yasir et al, 2020). The present study had the goal of filling this gap.…”

“…Currently, the main strategy to control stored product insect pests in warehouses is the phosphine fumigation along with the use of residual insecticides for surface treatment as grain protectants (White and Leesch 1996;Yasir et al 2021). Unfortunately, these insecticides cause contamination of food with toxic pesticide residues (Shojaaddini et al 2008;Debnath et al 2011).…”
