RESIDENTIAL WATER DEMAND: A POOLED, TIME SERIES, CROSS SECTION STUDY OF MALMÖ, SWEDEN1

Abstract: Shortcoming associated with past water demand studies are evaluated. To overcome these shortcomings, pooled, time series, cross section data from ‐6, Sweden, are used in an ordinary Least squares analysis to estimate the demand for residential water. Elasticities for five variables, including price and income, are estimated. An approach for the conduct of future water demand studies is suggested.

“…Although studies from the US have remained common since 2006 [17,18], many have also concentrated on developing countries ( [19] and references therein), for example, Marinoski et al [20] focused on Brazil and Araral and Wang [21] focused on key cities, states, and/or provinces in Southeast Asia. In addition, many European countries have featured in recent studies concerned with water consumption (Table 1), including France [22,23], Cyprus [24], Spain [25][26][27][28][29], Sweden [30,31], Germany [32], Denmark [33], Greece [34], and Poland [35]. Italy has been studied only with a regional and local focus: Mazzanti and Montini [10] studied the Emilia Romagna Region, Musolesi and Nosvelli [11] studied the Cremona Province, and Statzu and Strazzera [12] studied the island of Sardinia.…”

“…Como mostrado em estudos anteriores (Aitken et al, 1994;Hanke & De Mare, 1982), nosso modelo revelou que a posse de aparelhos e utensílios domésticos que consomem água promove o seu desperdício. Na medida em que o número desses aparatos aumente nos domicílios, também se elevará o consumo de água.…”

“…For example, Howe and Linaweaver (1967), Billings and Agthe (1980), Lyman (1992), Taylor et al (2004) and Gaudin (2006) in the US, and Hanke and de Maré (1982), Hansen (1996), Arbués et al (2004) and Arbués and Villanúa (2006) in Europe. Though less frequently, we may also find studies examining the impact of different pricing structures on water consumption.…”
