Residential Segregation, Neighborhood Health Care Organizations, and Children's Health Care Utilization in the Phoenix Urbanized Area

Abstract: Research has demonstrated health care consequences of racial/ethnic residential segregation. Here, I test one possible mechanism-the distribution of community health care organizations and service providers across urban communities. Using data from a 2013 survey on children's health care utilization in the Phoenix urbanized area combined with data on a 2013 census of health care organizations, I estimate a series of statistical models in order to test this relationship. I find that Latino and Native American s… Show more

Experiences of housing discrimination have been associated with distress among Latinx immigrants (Woo et al., 2020), particularly higher depressive and anxious symptoms (Lee, 2009), and restricted access to health care services (Anderson, 2020).…”

“…Another study found that racial-ethnic residential segregation was linked to a greater likelihood of patients seeing nonpsychiatrists for mental health needs (Dinwiddie et al 2013). A study of the Phoenix area found that the lack of health care service provision in Latino-segregated neighborhoods was linked to a lower likelihood of seeing a personal physician for pediatric care and greater use of clinics (Anderson 2020). Chan et al (2012) also found that although Black and Latinos living in highly segregated areas had adequate spatial access to facilities, they were less likely to receive certain services, especially specialist care.…”

“…Moreover, the structural racism associated with segregation is equally critical in affecting minority health; it promotes racial discrimination through various systems such as housing, employment, income, health care, and credit, and reinforces pre-existing patterns of inequality. Most of the time, segregation promotes the concentration of poverty; it leads to a reduction in available resources such as health care [ 14 , 15 , 16 ], healthy food shops [ 17 , 18 , 19 ], and green spaces [ 20 , 21 ], in some cases along with air pollution exposure [ 22 , 23 ], all of which are significant reasons for causing and keeping minority or low-income populations in adverse health conditions [ 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 ].…”
