Horizontal wells are often much more efficient for oil production than vertical wells. However, the reservoir engineer is faced with several challenges specific for this technology both with regard to location of the horizontal section and reservoir management. The Troll field offshore Norway will be developed by 18 horizontal wells. on average at least 800m long. The performance of the horizontal wells is very sensitive to the local geological setting. Due to large permeability contrasts, numerous calcite cemented layers and a limited database for this huge reservoir. the geological control still remains uncertain prior to development. This paper discusses new challenges that appear when locating horizontal wells in this ge~logical environment. The challenges of optimizing well locations and predicting well performance in an uncertain environment are discussed. The uncertainties of several parameters are considered, including: depth to reservoir sands, thickness of sands, the areal extension and pOlition of the oil leg in high permeability sand, degree of calcite cementation within the sands, effective well length and drilling accuracy. Reservoir modeling aspects are also considered. Some important geological features have been incorporated in a stochastic model which simulates the well location management and the overall production success.References and illustrations at end of paper.

Integrated reservoir management in a Niger Delta oil rim field

Several hundred million barrels of oil and trillions standard cubic feet of gas are enclosed within the oil rim reservoirs in the Niger Delta. The low recovery from these reservoirs can be attributed to the excessive early water and gas breakthrough at the wells which requires immediate attention. However, the majority of oil rims are thinly bedded and exist between strong aquifers and large gas caps which make preventing water and gas coning a very difficult task. The best approach to optimize production from these oil rims is effective reservoir management which involves evaluation, monitoring, goal setting, and revision of a few strategies for efficient field development. Current strategies to lessen these problems are limited due to their complexities and low recovery factor. This paper presents an integrated reservoir management approach for improved exploitation of an oil rim reservoirs in the Niger Delta. Seven development strategies were evaluated using Net-Present Value (NPV), Internal Rate of Return (IRR), and Discounted Payout Period (DPOP) criteria. In all these strategies, well placement, number of years of production, and production cycle were considered uncertain. In this paper one of the areas of conflicts observed with the performance of horizontal wells standoff with respect to development of thin oil rim reservoirs is examined. In a technical paper as part of the critical review of literature on the exploitation of thin oil rim reservoirs with large gas cap and aquifer, this author had highlighted the problem. As part of sensitives in horizontal well standoff, Cosmos and Fatoke (2004) tested three positions; one-third, centre and two-third positions from the GOC in a Niger Delta field. They concluded that the landing closest to the GOC (one-third position) yielded lowest Oil compared to the centre and two-third positions. Surprisingly the work done by Sai Garimella et al (2011) in a 60ft Ghariff & Al Khlata shallow marine low permeability sandstone reservoirs in a field in Oman showed a different result with the one-third position indicating an optimum recovery from a horizontal well. Interestingly both authors positions on the performance had support from other authors. This study used a 3D reservoir model, investigated different horizontal well standoff performances and applied permeability reduction to simulate different reservoir quality. The objective was to see if the reservoir quality was a factor in the different horizontal well standoff performance seen from different regions of the world while noting their different depositional environments. Results from the investigation is presented in this paper and shows a different trend from both authors mentioned above.
