Reservoir characterization in under-balanced drilling using low-order lumped model

Abstract: Estimation of the production index of oil and gas from the reservoir into the well during Under-Balanced Drilling (UBD) is studied. This paper compares a Lyapunov-based adaptive observer and a joint unscented Kalman filter (UKF) based on a low order lumped (LOL) model and the joint UKF based on the distributed drift-flux model by using real-time measurements of the choke and the bottom-hole pressures. Using the OLGA simulator, it is found that all adaptive observers are capable of identifying the production co… Show more

“…The author used the nonlinear movement horizon observer 18 to estimate the annular gas and liquid mass, gas and liquid output constants from the reservoir into the well with the measurement of shock and bottom hole pressure during the UBD. This observer algorithm was tested using a lower‐order lumped model for two separate simulations of low and high noise covariance estimation using Joint Unscented Kalman filters.…”

“…During underbalanced drilling efficiency, the spontaneous counter‐current imbibition should be modeled on a number of different imbibition mechanisms in porous media. This paper proposes a number‐based approach to evaluate different parameters that greatly affect the damage to formation caused by underbalanced performance drilling performance 18 . As formation damage has caused many inefficiencies in drilling, the precise model fits best for the reservoir characteristics by looking at field assumptions; the main objective of the current study is to present an established analytical model approach to prevent penetrated mud filtration by penetrating material saturation and its comparison to laboratory knowledge.…”

“…Due to the importance of the amount of the outlet fluid from the well and controlling the variations of the oil and gas reservoirs, most studies have focused on well's outlet measurement. Using inference methods with a focus on gas lift wells is a notable subject in this regard (Aamo et al, 2005;Kaasa et al, 2012;Nikoofard et al, 2018).…”

“…As a result, using soft sensors is a solution to overcome the existing problems and increase the accuracy of multiphase fluids measurement [14]. In this regard, the Different types of Kalman filter (KF) such as extended (EKF) or unscented (UKF) Kalman Filter area well-established technique for state estimation [15,16].…”
