Research Trends in Off-Site Construction Management: Review of Literature at the Process Level

Abstract: Off-Site Construction (OSC) is a new construction method based on factory production. Due to its advantages over traditional methods, such as high productivity, economic efficiency, and excellence in quality, OSC research has actively been conducted worldwide ranging from design and production standardization, transportation method, to construction planning. Thus, to understand what knowledge has been developed to improve the management of OSC projects, this study reviewed OSC papers that focus on improving a … Show more

“…Many researchers have investigated and validated the significance of stakeholder relationship in construction context (Olander, 2006a; Jergeas et al , 2000; Cleland, 1997). It is apparent that stakeholder management is an area that has been generally overlooked in OSC literature (Hu et al , 2019; Hosseini et al , 2018; Jang et al , 2019). Specifically, Hu et al (2019) observed that the theme of stakeholders' integration, collaboration and relationship only accounts for 8.3% in scholarly literature of OSC's stakeholder.…”

“…Practical OSC projects examples of the reports shared by WPI, NAO, and BRE include: India's 10 story "INSTACON" assembled in 48 h in 2012, and China's 30 floor "T30 Tower Hotel" and 57 floor "Mini Sky City" assembled in 2-3 weeks in 2011 and 2015 respectively (Ganninger, 2020). Quite recently amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the Chinese construction authorities in Wuhan set up a 645,000square-foot (1,000 bed) Leishenshan hospital in ten days using OSC methods with least amount of workforce (Xinhuanet, 2020;Jang et al, 2019). OSC has multiple benefits, prominent amongst these are its eco-friendly nature and its tolerance towards health and safety issues for the employed workforce (Ammad et al, 2021a, b).…”
