Research Status and Prospect of Friction Stir Processing Technology

Abstract: Friction stir processing (FSP) is a novel solid-phase processing technique that is derived from friction stir welding (FSW). The microstructure of the base metal can be modified with the friction heat and stir function during processing. It can be used to fabricate surface composites and in situ composites by adding reinforced particles into the metal matrix via FSP. Friction stir processing can significantly improve the hardness, wear resistance, ductility, etc., while preventing defects caused by material me… Show more

“…Kan et.al [11], reviewed the research growths in terms of principle, process and application of FSP technology as well as its upcoming research directions and developments prospects. The feasibility of FSP has been demonstrated extensively via experiments, but the current process is not sufficiently mature.…”

“…In the last two decades the FSP technology has been extensively studied and has evolved in to many new application directions including superplastic materials and surface composites. [11]. The problems associated with melting and solidification can be addressed by making surface composites using Friction stir process.…”

“…For duplex stainless steels, there are studies showing the success of using thermal treatments for increasing abrasion resistance 8 , increasing corrosion resistance and slip wear via laser shock peening 9 , and applying friction stir processing (FSP) for improving cavitation resistance 10 . Surface treatment by FSP is derived from the friction stir welding (FSW) process 11,12 . FSP occurs mainly through the contact of a rotating tool, composed of a shoulder and pin, that is plunged with an axial force in the workpiece, generating heat by friction and deformation.…”

“…This coupled system is promised to reduce processing forces, increase process speed and reduce manufacturing costs [17][18][19] . Apart their different technological purpose, FSP and FSW are correlated processes, as input parameters and phenomena observed during the execution of both manufacturing procedures can be linked to produce similar metallurgical results 11,12,14,20 . The friction stir welding process was already promising for the welding of duplex stainless steels [21][22][23][24] , since this process allowed to obtain welded joints with superior mechanical properties to those obtained by conventional welding, with absence of secondary deleterious phases, despite the welds obtained with this process present higher propensity to formation of these phases after the joining 25 .…”
