Research Review: Hear the Silent, See the Absent-local solutions for a global problem: the development of jourNet

Abstract

jourNet, the global network for professional education in journalism and media, was conceived and established to meet a need in the developing world. In the process, it has demonstrated a capacity to enrich and enhance the education of professional media practitioners more widely through self-help, mutual support and the innovative use of new technology.In December 2000, at Blantyre in Malawi, UNESCO's International Program for the Development of Communication (IPDC) agreed to fund the second phase of jourNet's development, which will include going online. This article outlines the historical and conceptual framework of that development, and the research that has gone into it.
