Research Progress on the Mechanism Related to Recurrence and Metastasis of GIST

Abstract

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) represent the most prevalent malignant mesenchymal tumors occurring in the gastrointestinal tract, with approximately 30% of GISTs classified as malignant. Despite the availability of various effective therapeutic regimens for early-stage treatment, approximately 50% of GIST patients experience recurrent metastasis following treatment and the underlying mechanism of this development remains poorly understood. Consequently, there is a pressing need to further investigate the mechanisms influencing GIST recurrence and metastasis. Such investigations hold great potential for improving patient survival rates. In this manuscript, we provide a comprehensive summary of recent research progress and the current understanding of the recurrence and metastasis mechanisms in GIST. We aim to establish a solid theoretical foundation that can better guide clinical therapeutic strategies.
