Research Progress on Signaling Pathway‐Associated Oxidative Stress in Endothelial Cells

Abstract: Studying the mechanisms of oxidative stress in endothelial cells is vital to the discovery of novel drugs for the treatment of cardiovascular disease. This article reviews the progress within the field of the role of oxidative responses in the physiology and growth of endothelial cells and emphasizes the effects of several main signal pathways involved in the oxidative stress of endothelial cells. Herein, we aim to provide scientific direction that can serve as a basis for researchers specializing in the signa… Show more

“…The Keap1-Nrf2-antioxidant response element (ARE) signaling pathway is an oxidative stress-sensitive defensive response system [42,43]. Upon exposure to adverse environmental pressure, including many exogenous chemicals, the transcription factor Nrf2 escapes inhibition by the specific repressor Keap1 in the cytoplasm and associates with AREs in the nucleus where it activates the expression of multiple antioxidant enzymes and cytoprotective proteins that contribute to the defense against oxidative stress and alleviate cell damage [6,44].…”

“…Isoquercitrin is a glycated flavonoid [ 55 ] with a strong antioxidant activity due to its capacity to scavenge free radicals [ 56 ] and to inhibit arginase, favouring NO production [ 57 ]. This phenolic compound has anticancer [ 58 ] and antiapoptotic effects [ 59 ].…”

“…Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) is a central element of antioxidant regulation in cellular systems and its activation is mediated by OS [6]. When cellular defense capacities are exceeded by insults and the OS cannot be mediated, it is highly probable that pathologies will be generated, such as heart diseases [7], cancer [8], neurodegenerative diseases [9], or accelerated aging [10]. Physical exercise has been demonstrated to activate Nrf2 in response to the increase of ROS, a product of the energy metabolism, including the antioxidant protector response [11].…”
