Research progress on sample pretreatment methods for migrating substances from food contact materials

Abstract: Excessive absorption of migrating substances from food contact materials can affect human health. Thus, it is essential to analyze the migration of contaminant from food contact materials. However, comprehensive analysis has been challenged by low concentration of migrating substances, manifold and complex matrix interference of food contact materials. Therefore, appropriate sample pretreatment methods should be applied before instrumental detection, which is essential to improve the analytical efficiency, sen… Show more

“…In recent years, the food safety issue is no longer restricted to toxic and hazardous substances in food but has expanded to contact materials related to food production, processing, and transport. Food contact materials (FCMs) are the raw materials, processing equipment, and packaging materials that contact with food during production, packaging, processing, transport, storage, and use [1]. Due to the contact between food and FCMs, intentionally added substances and non‐intentionally added substances in FCMs would release into food through migration, resulting in contamination of food.…”

“…Huelsmann et al in their review presented selected applications, describing the use of molecularly imprinted polymers, metal and covalent organic frameworks, ionic liquids and magnetic ionic liquids, and deep eutectic solvents as novel materials in sample preparation [6]. Ouyang and Lu in their review summarized the development of sample pretreatment methods for the analysis of migrating substances from FCMs till 2020 [7].…”

“…In fact, the identification of unknown compounds in FCM, including NIAS, is an emerging analytical field [14][15][16]. For a wide-range compound detection, liquid chromatography (LC) coupled to high resolution accurate mass spectrometry (HRMS) is currently the most used technique, mainly with hybrid quadrupole-time-of-flight (Q-TOF) and Q-Orbitrap detectors [15], providing information on accurate mass and fragmentation pattern.…”
