Research progress of TiO2 photocathodic protection to metals in marine environment

Abstract: Corrosion protection has become an important issue as the amount of infrastructure construction in marine environment increased. Photocathodic protection is a promising method to reduce the corrosion of metals, and titanium dioxide (TiO 2) is the most widely used photoanode. This review summarizes the progress in TiO 2 photogenerated protection in recent years. Diff erent types of semiconductors, including sulfi des, metals, metal oxides, polymers, and other materials, are used to design and modify TiO 2. The … Show more

“…For this reason, this paper also presents a preliminary evaluation of the role played by the coating in the corrosion performance of stainless steel substrate. Moreover, there is also an interesting new research field that studies the possible photocathodic protection, where photocatalytic materials (such as TiO 2 ), can produce electrons under light irradiation that are transferred to the protected metal in order to reduce metal self-corrosion potential [51]. The interest in photocathodic protection is continuously growing due to its low cost, nontoxic and environmentally friendly application [52,53].…”

“…Natural semiconductor minerals include metal sulfides and metal oxides, in which the metal oxide band gap is often greater than 1.5 eV [16]. Anatase (TiO 2 ) has attracted a lot of attention because of its low cost, non-toxic and good photocatalytic performance, which can be used as a model mineral [26,27]. It is widely used in the degradation of organic pollutants [28], heavy metals [29], dye-sensitized solar cells [26], biomedical fields [27].…”

It is widely used in the degradation of organic pollutants [28], heavy metals [29], dye-sensitized solar cells [26], biomedical fields [27]. However, anatase (TiO 2 ) particles have defects such as low utilization of visible light and easy recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes [30].…”

“… , and WL have been widely reported to be important nutrient and hydrological variables that indirectly influence zooplankton dynamics by virtue of mediating phytoplankton growth indicated by Chl a in aquatic ecosystems [ 2 , 33 35 ]. Those genera observed in this study, such as Brachionus , Rotaria , Keratella , Paramecium , Schmackeria and Polyarthra , are typical indicators of eutrophic water body where and concentrations are normally high [ 33 , 36 39 ].…”

WL fluctuations in TGRA leads to the cyclical alterations of physicochemical properties of water environment and constantly changing habitats, especially nitrogen-relating nutrients recycling under WL fluctuating circumstances.…”
