Research Progress of Polyvinyl Alcohol Water-Resistant Film Materials

Abstract: Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is one of the few biodegradable synthetic resins from petroleum-based sources that can alleviate white pollution in the environment. PVA film materials have excellent properties, such as high barrier, high transparency, high toughness, biocompatibility, and adjustable water solubility. However, due to the presence of hydrophilic hydroxyl groups in the side chain of PVA resin, when PVA film is placed in a humid or water environment, swelling or even dissolution will occur, which greatly … Show more

“…Through Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), a polymeric film was obtained from E0_1 by the casting method. Furthermore, the composition E0_2 was obtained after mixing the E0_1 composition at 35 °C for 3 h with glutaraldehyde (GTA) [ 104 ]. A film that was 164 µm thick was prepared by the casting method to be used for the FTIR investigations.…”

“…This phenomenon is largely attributed to the difference in the molecular structures of the two polymers. The gelatin has a long chain of amino acids vulnerable to hydrogen bonding by water molecules, whereas the smaller and more compact secondary alcohol structure ( ) in PVA is better for resisting such water bonding [51].…”

“…Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a water-soluble polymer with a carbon chain as the main chain and a large number of hydroxyl groups on the side chain [ 54 , 55 ]. It is non-toxic, easily processed, biodegradable, has good mechanical properties [ 56 , 57 ], and can be mixed with natural polymeric materials such as polysaccharides and proteins to improve its properties [ 58 , 59 , 60 ].…”
