In this study, iron oxide (Fe3O4) was coated with ZrO2, and doped with three rare earth elements((Y/La/Ce), and a multi-staged rare earth doped zirconia adsorbent was prepared by using uniform design U14, Response Surface methodology, and orthogonal design, to remove As3+ and As5+ from the aqueous solution. Based on the results of TEM, EDS, XRD, FTIR, and N2-adsorption desorption test, the best molar ratio of Fe3O4:TMAOH:Zirconium butoxide:Y:La:Ce was selected as 1:12:11:1:0.02:0.08. The specific surface area and porosity was 263 m2/g, and 0.156 cm3/g, respectively. The isothermal curves and fitting equation parameters show that Langmuir model, and Redlich Peterson model fitted well. As per calculations of the Langmuir model, the highest adsorption capacities for As3+ and As5+ ions were recorded as 68.33 mg/g, 84.23 mg/g, respectively. The fitting curves and equations of the kinetic models favors the quasi second order kinetic model. Material regeneration was very effective, and even in the last cycle the regeneration capacities of both As3+ and As5+ were 75.15%, and 77.59%, respectively. Adsorption and regeneration results suggest that adsorbent has easy synthesis method, and reusable, so it can be used as a potential adsorbent for the removal of arsenic from aqueous solution.

As(III)‐to‐As(V) Oxidation in Copper Smelter Wastewater by In Situ‐Generated Ozone

As(III) is the most common arsenic species in copper smelter wastewater but is difficult to remove, and an oxidation to As(V) is desirable. The oxidation of As(III) to As(V) in copper smelter wastewater was studied using in situ-generated ozone, which has a high oxidation capacity and does not create secondary contaminants. With the aim to determine adequate conditions for As(III) oxidation, experiments considering pH, ozonation time, and oxygen flow rate as variables were done. Experimental tests showed that the best pH was at 2 and with a moderate oxygen flow rate. The complete oxidation of As(III) in both synthetic wastewater and real wastewater was achieved nearly after the same time of ozonation. Pseudo-first-order kinetics could model the As(III)-to-As(V) oxidation by ozone.

Removal of contaminants from wastewater is a big concern for the scientific community. Heavy metals are one of the major contaminants present in wastewater. Heavy metals such as Cd2+, Pb2+, Mn2+, and so forth, are highly toxic and pose a serious threat to the environment due to their nonbiodegradable nature. With the advent of nanobiotechnology, heavy metal contaminants can be mitigated with the help of nanomaterials produced by eco‐friendly methods. Specially designed bionanomaterials often exhibit properties such as increased shelf life, self‐healing nature, adaptability in different environments, and cost‐effectiveness, thus showing advantages over nanomaterials produced by physicochemical methods. Due to their high specificity and adsorption capacity, bionanomaterials can remove heavy metals present even in a very low concentration in wastewater. The use of bionanotechnology in their remediation paves a way for environmental sustainability and helps in cost reduction. This paper intends to discuss the nanobiotechnological approach for the remediation of heavy metals from wastewater. Furthermore, the paper also reviews some important nanomaterials and their potential applications in the depollution of heavy‐metal contaminated wastewater.
