Research priorities for rehabilitation and aging with HIV: a framework from the Canada-International HIV and Rehabilitation Research Collaborative (CIHRRC)

Abstract: Background: People living with HIV are living longer, and can experience physical, mental and social health challenges associated with aging and multimorbidity. Rehabilitation is well positioned to address disability and maximize healthy aging. An international collaborative network, called the Canada-International HIV and Rehabilitation Research Collaborative (CIHRRC), works to guide this emerging field. In this article, we report findings from CIHRRC’s aim to identify emerging research priorities in HIV, agi… Show more

“…These results reflect those of Siegler et al [41], that healthcare providers do not feel comfortable caring for issues that they do not usually treat, with a recent study also showing that 46% of geriatricians were not comfortable providing care to people living with HIV [42]. The effectiveness of exercise for people living with HIV has been stated in systematic reviews including the one by O'Brien et al (7), a Framework of the Physical Therapy Role in HIV Care in 2019 (8), and collaborative research priorities (9). In addition, research evidence tells us that rehabilitation services and programs are sorely needed by many of the estimated 62,790 people were living with HIV in Canada (People living with HIV in Canada: infographic, Accessed August 16, 2023) especially by those over 50 years who make nearly 50% of this population (10)(11)(12).…”
