This study explored the linguistic challenges, faced by Assistant Teachers of English in the classroom with specific reference to two primary schools in the Limpopo province, South Africa. The study also investigated the perceptions of English teachers and learners on the support, received from Assistant Teachers in English classrooms. The study used interviews to investigate and explore various linguistic challenges, faced by Assistant Teachers. Data was also collected using questionnaires, which were designed to compare perceptions of English teachers and learners who received support from Assistant Teachers. Data from questionnaires was analysed quantitatively, and data from interviews was analysed qualitatively. This study was prompted by the increasing number of Assistant Teachers, required in South African schools. Furthermore, several research studies found that Assistant Teachers struggle to assist learners in Mathematics, English and Science. Amongst other things, the study revealed that Assistant Teachers of English have inadequate English language competency to assist in English classrooms. Challenges in grammar, sentence structure, word formation, comprehension, and difficulty to express themselves in English contribute to Assistant Teachers’ incompetence in the English language. Although learners find the support of Assistant Teachers in the English classroom helpful for the teaching and learning process, English teachers are concerned with the quality of education, received by learners, since they are aware of the lack of English competency amongst Assistant Teachers of English. The overall findings of this study revealed that there is a need to appoint well-trained Assistant Teachers that will not only benefit teachers but be able to provide learners with the quality education they deserve. Findings from this study could contribute to improving the quality of education in primary schools.

Improving critical thinking skills of high school students through the implementation of mobile-based game applications

This study aimed to identify the effectiveness of Android-based mobile games in helping high school students improve their critical thinking skills. A quantitative research method was used through a quasi-experimental design with pre-test and post-test in both control and experimental classes. Data collection techniques comprised test techniques and the use of tools to obtain data about the critical thinking skills of high school students. The data was then analyzed quantitatively by t-test and n-gain scores. A total of 58 high school students studying the sociology subject participated in this study. The findings show that the use of mobile game-based learning products has a major impact on improving students' critical thinking skills. In addition, based on the findings of this study, it was evident that mobile game-based learning applied to sociology learning was included in the "efficient" category in influencing and enhancing students' critical thinking skills in an effort to build 21st century competence in high school students. Therefore, this research implied that teachers can start utilizing mobile game-based learning products as a medium for learning sociology in high school.

Analysis of Types of Technology Use as a Supporting Tool for Sociology Learning by High School Students

Today's findings must refer to the four attributes of 21st-century learning: specific reasoning and critical thinking, imagination, progress, joint effort, and correspondence. 21st-century learning requires discoveries that are open and versatile to today's changing mechanical events. Therefore, this research aims to analyze the types of technology used by teachers to support the sociology learning process. In this study, the method used is the descriptive qualitative method. Data collection techniques used were surveys and interviews referring to questionnaires and interview guidelines as research instruments. The research subjects consisted of 145 high school students. The data obtained will then be analyzed interactively with 4 stages. The research results show that 95% of students are identified as having a smartphone. It is also supported by regulations at school that allow the use of smartphones for learning activities. It is just that this opportunity has challenges where students still tend to use smartphones to play games (48% of student respond). Seeing these opportunities and challenges, smartphones are a type of technology that can be optimized for sociology learning activities independently and in groups. Thus students can divert the use of smartphones as a means of playing, becoming a tool to support learning facilitated by the teacher.
