Research on the Rheological Characteristics and Aging Resistance of Asphalt Modified with Tourmaline

Abstract: Tourmaline modified asphalt (TMA) binders were prepared with different modifier types and contents in this research. The routine properties, rheological properties, and aging resistance were evaluated to research the function of tourmaline on the performances of asphalt binders. Test results show that the storage stability can be improved significantly by the smaller particle size and negative-ion treated surface of tourmaline modifier. It indicates that the stiffness and rutting-resistance of TMA binder can b… Show more

“…There are two main preparation methods for tourmaline-modified asphalt binder, denoted herein as TMA. Compared to the surface modification method, TMA prepared using the mechanical method, namely, the high-speed shear blending method, are susceptible to interfacial separation between the asphalt binder and the tourmaline during storage and construction [27,29].…”

“…The introduction of MnO 2 to Fe 3 O 4 /CuO nanoparticles was found to enhance the surface area and pore structure to achieve color removal of the fluid [33]. Ye et al [29] studied the effects of tourmaline on the zero-shear viscosity (ZSV) of modified asphalt binders. Furthermore, it was observed from the study [29] that the quantitative value of ZSV increased as the dosage of TP increased.…”

“…Studies conducted by Li [ 11 ] and Cao et al [ 12 ] demonstrate the impact of RTFOT, PAV, and UV aging tests on the fundamental properties of asphalt. Several researchers argue that analyzing the high-temperature performance of asphalt through its rheological properties is more scientifically rigorous [ 13 , 14 ]. The dynamic shear rheological (DSR) test is utilized to investigate the high-temperature rheological properties of asphalt, while the rutting factor (G*/sinδ) serves as an indicator for evaluating its high-temperature performance [ 15 , 16 ].…”
