Research on the rectangular clinching process for metal and polyoxymethylene sheets

Abstract: Polyoxymethylene (POM), as an energy‐saving material, is widely applied in the manufacturing field. Yet, research on the rectangular clinching process between metal and POM sheets is still lacking. In this paper, the rectangular clinching process for POM and Al5052‐H32 plates was investigated. The feasibility of the metal–polymer hybrid component had been analyzed in terms of diverse forming forces and diverse joint layout angles, respectively. The mechanical characteristics were appraised by the lap‐shear tes… Show more

“…9 Another process, the mechanical clinching process is used to make a metal-polymer hybrid joint by applying forming force so that materials are plastically deformed and interlocked between materials. 10,[11][12][13] FSW was invented by Thomas et al 14 back in 1991. At that time, it was considered the only viable option for welding Aluminium alloys (mainly AA2xxx and AA7xxx series alloys) which are difficult to weld or were considered unweldable.…”

“…Ouyang et al [38] explored the possibility of forming multilayer metal-polymer structures using conventional clinching process with the round punch. The effect of different forming forces on the joint performance of AA5052 and POM hybrid clinched joints in clinching process using a modified rectangular punch was also investigated [39]. However, the design and fabrication of rectangular punch is difficult and expensive.…”
