Research on the Critical Issues for Power Battery Reusing of New Energy Vehicles in China

Abstract: With the rapid development of new energy vehicles (NEVs) industry in China, the reusing of retired power batteries is becoming increasingly urgent. In this paper, the critical issues for power batteries reusing in China are systematically studied. First, the strategic value of power batteries reusing, and the main modes of battery reusing are analyzed. Second, the economic benefit models of power batteries echelon utilization and recycling are constructed. Finally, the economic benefits of lithium iron phospha… Show more

“…e carbon emissions from electric vehicles can be cut by 8%-11% through recycling (from Grave to Cradle stage) [62]. In particular, the recycling of power batteries will significantly reduce the overall carbon emissions of electric vehicles [63]. Fourth, the carbon emission reduction target of the automobile industry can be achieved by reducing the carbon emissions of the supply chain.…”

“…(d) Recycling level Recycling level (Figure 3) includes dismantling, disconnecting and full discharge of the pack and intelligent sorting of cells for echelon utilisation. Echelon utilisation includes reusability of spent batteries in secondary applications or recovery of materials (Li, Co and Mn) from the spent cells [69,70]. The intelligent sorting is done based on their residual energy/health status.…”
