Research on the application of the Sleep EEG Net model based on domain adaptation transfer in the detection of driving fatigue

Fatigued driving threatens the safety of people’s lives and property. Scent countermeasures offer minimal disruption and high efficacy, making them a promising approach. The aim of this study was to explore the application of scent countermeasures in alleviating fatigued driving. This study explored changes in EEG frequency bands (alpha, beta, theta, and gamma) and the activity of EEG metrics (R(α/β), Rθ/(α+β) and R(α+θ)/(α+β)) in the temporal lobe during driving tasks, selected fatigued driving identifiers, and aided validation by investigating subjective fatigue with the Karolinska Sleepiness Scale (KSS). The EEG indicators all increased, with a significant increase in R(α/β). R(α/β) was combined with the KSS to explore the effects of three scents, peppermint, grapefruit, and lavender, on driving fatigue. The subjective questionnaire results indicated that all three scents significantly improved driving fatigue, with significantly lower levels of driving fatigue compared to the control group. The analysis of EEG signals revealed a significant decrease in R(α/β) after the implementation of scent countermeasures. Moreover, R(α/β) was found to be lower in all three odor intervention groups compared to the control group. All three scents were found to significantly alleviate driving fatigue. The grapefruit scent had a better timely effect in relieving driving fatigue and the lavender scent had a longer effectiveness. This study provides further exploration for the application of odor interventions to alleviate driving fatigue. This study provides a practical reference for drivers to use odors to avoid fatigue in order to improve road safety.

Association of Visual-Based Signals with Electroencephalography Patterns in Enhancing the Drowsiness Detection in Drivers with Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Individuals with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) face increased accident risks due to excessive daytime sleepiness. PERCLOS, a recognized drowsiness detection method, encounters challenges from image quality, eyewear interference, and lighting variations, impacting its performance, and requiring validation through physiological signals. We propose visual-based scoring using adaptive thresholding for eye aspect ratio with OpenCV for face detection and Dlib for eye detection from video recordings. This technique identified 453 drowsiness (PERCLOS ≥ 0.3 || CLOSDUR ≥ 2 s) and 474 wakefulness episodes (PERCLOS < 0.3 and CLOSDUR < 2 s) among fifty OSA drivers in a 50 min driving simulation while wearing six-channel EEG electrodes. Applying discrete wavelet transform, we derived ten EEG features, correlated them with visual-based episodes using various criteria, and assessed the sensitivity of brain regions and individual EEG channels. Among these features, theta–alpha-ratio exhibited robust mapping (94.7%) with visual-based scoring, followed by delta–alpha-ratio (87.2%) and delta–theta-ratio (86.7%). Frontal area (86.4%) and channel F4 (75.4%) aligned most episodes with theta–alpha-ratio, while frontal, and occipital regions, particularly channels F4 and O2, displayed superior alignment across multiple features. Adding frontal or occipital channels could correlate all episodes with EEG patterns, reducing hardware needs. Our work could potentially enhance real-time drowsiness detection reliability and assess fitness to drive in OSA drivers.

Efficient Sleep Stage Identification Using Piecewise Linear EEG Signal Reduction: A Novel Algorithm for Sleep Disorder Diagnosis

Sleep is a vital physiological process for human health, and accurately detecting various sleep states is crucial for diagnosing sleep disorders. This study presents a novel algorithm for identifying sleep stages using EEG signals, which is more efficient and accurate than the state-of-the-art methods. The key innovation lies in employing a piecewise linear data reduction technique called the Halfwave method in the time domain. This method simplifies EEG signals into a piecewise linear form with reduced complexity while preserving sleep stage characteristics. Then, a features vector with six statistical features is built using parameters obtained from the reduced piecewise linear function. We used the MIT-BIH Polysomnographic Database to test our proposed method, which includes more than 80 h of long data from different biomedical signals with six main sleep classes. We used different classifiers and found that the K-Nearest Neighbor classifier performs better in our proposed method. According to experimental findings, the average sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of the proposed algorithm on the Polysomnographic Database considering eight records is estimated as 94.82%, 96.65%, and 95.73%, respectively. Furthermore, the algorithm shows promise in its computational efficiency, making it suitable for real-time applications such as sleep monitoring devices. Its robust performance across various sleep classes suggests its potential for widespread clinical adoption, making significant advances in the knowledge, detection, and management of sleep problems.
