Research on oxidation kinetics of tight oil from Wolfcamp field

Abstract: Thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry were performed on a tight oil that was collected from the Wolfcamp shale reservoir, USA. The results indicate that although the oil has similar properties to those of a light oil, it shows similar thermal-oxidative behaviors to those of a heavy oil. Kinetic data of the tight oil as activation energy and frequency factor were estimated by the Arrhenius method. This kinetic analysis could provide us insight to characterize the reactivity of the tight oil, an… Show more

“…To study the crude oil oxidation characteristics, the air is usually selected as the reactive gas, where a constant heating rate is applied during the tests. In most of the crude oil's air purging tests, two sudden mass losses are usually observed in the TGA results [14][15][16]. It was stated that the two mass loss behaviors imply the LTO and HTO, respectively.…”

“…However, most of these studies only qualitatively evaluated the possible potential of an oil and rock system for conducting an AIP. TGA and DSC have been employed by many researchers to identify the oxidation reaction scheme and examine the thermal-oxidative behavior of different crude oils and oil-rock mixture samples [11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19]. Although, these studies do not provide quantitative results, the information could still be interpreted in order to help predict the candidate oil samples for further combustion tube tests.…”

“…If the activation energy of a reaction scheme is lower, the reaction can be triggered more easily, or the reaction can be more readily sustained. In this paper, the kinetic data as activation energy in LTO and HTO are summarized separately, from 22 different crude oils, and with API gravity ranges from 11 to 44.3 [9,14,17,20,28,30,33,[35][36][37][38][39][40][41][42][43]. No relation between the API gravity and the activation energies were found based upon the data, which implies that the API gravity of the crude oil cannot be used as an all-descriptive measure of the thermal behavior of crude oil [5].…”
