In today’s Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) environment, where different systems interact with the physical world, the state proposed by the Industry 4.0 standards can lead to escalating vulnerabilities, especially when these systems receive data streams from multiple intermediaries, requiring multilevel security approaches, in addition to link encryption. At the same time taking into account the heterogeneity of the systems included in the IIoT ecosystem and the non-institutionalized interoperability in terms of hardware and software, serious issues arise as to how to secure these systems. In this framework, given that the protection of industrial equipment is a requirement inextricably linked to technological developments and the use of the IoT, it is important to identify the major vulnerabilities and the associated risks and threats and to suggest the most appropriate countermeasures. In this context, this study provides a description of the attacks against IIoT systems, as well as a thorough analysis of the solutions for these attacks, as they have been proposed in the most recent literature.

Dynamic Network Path Provisioning and Selection for the Detection and Mitigation of Data Tampering Attacks in Networked Control Systems

Networked control systems can help build cost-effective and flexible industrial systems. A system that can function while being immune to cyberattacks is necessary. A method called fixed redundant path selection (FRPS) has been proposed to detect and mitigate data tampering attacks in a networked motion control system. This system contains redundant forward network paths from the controller to the motor sides to detect the attacked path by comparing the values that are received through respective paths.Then, a path selector on the motor side chooses a value on the path that is not attacked based on the majority decision. Increasing the number of redundant paths improves the detection performance of simultaneous attacks against multiple paths. However, it also increases the amount of traffic because the same data are transmitted to all of the redundant paths. This study proposes a dynamic redundant path selection (DRPS) method to balance the detection performance and the amount of traffic. The proposed method initially applies three redundant paths and changes the number of redundant paths to five only when the path selector detects a difference among the received values for the three paths. The experiments confirm that the proposed DRPS outperforms the conventional FRPS. The former can detect and mitigate the data tampering attacks while reducing the number of network paths during tampering detection when the system is exposed to simultaneous attacks against up to two of the redundant paths.INDEX TERMS Cyberattack, cyber-physical system, motion control, networked control system, tampering detection.

Cyber‐Physical Systems (CPSs) are becoming more automated and aimed to be as efficient as possible by enabling integration between their operations and Information Technology (IT) resources. In combination with production automation, these systems need to identify their assets and the correlation between them; any potential threats or failures alert the relevant user/department and suggest the appropriate remediation plan. Moreover, identifying critical assets in these systems is essential. With numerous research and technologies available, assessing IT assets nowadays can be straightforward to implement. However, there is one significant issue of evaluating operational technology critical assets since they have different characteristics, and traditional solutions cannot work efficiently. This study presents the necessary background to attain the appropriate approach for monitoring critical assets in CPSs' Situational Awareness (SA). Additionally, the study presents a broad survey supported by an in‐depth review of previous works in three important aspects. First, it reviews the applicability of possible techniques, tools and solutions that can be used to collect detailed information from such systems. Secondly, it covers studies that were implemented to evaluate the criticality of assets in CPSs, demonstrates requirements for critical asset identification, explores different risks and failure techniques utilised in these systems and delves into approaches to evaluate such methods in energy systems. Finally, this paper highlights and analyses SA gaps based on existing solutions, provides future directions and discusses open research issues.
