The point foundation method is the head enlarged cement deep mixing columns with high-quality control which can be used for soft ground improvement. The article aims to present the application of this method to treat soft soil for the foundation of Samse Vina factory, Ninh Binh province. The thickness of soft soil varies from 5.4 m to 7.4 m with high compressibility and low shear strength. Thus, point foundation was used to improve this layer. The prediction methods of soil bearing capacity and the settlement on the point foundation were calculated. After the treatment of soil, the unconfined compression strength of the point foundation column was determined and the static compression test for the point foundation column was also performed. The research results show that this method can significantly reduce the settlement of shallow footing and improved the bearing capacity of the soil. The final settlement of shallow footing was smaller than 2.54 cm and the bearing capacity of soil treatment can be satisfied with the requirement of construction building. This is a successful case of the application of point foundation to improve soft soil in Vietnam.

The permeability of soil is an important factor controlling the flow of water through the subsoil. The article presents the results of studies of hydraulic parameters for overconsolidated clays using in situ tests. Using the excess pore pressure normalization technique, both in the case of monotonic and dilatory dissipation tests, and the time at which 50% dissipation of excess pore water pressure takes place, as well as taking into account the rigidity index of the analyzed soil, it was possible to estimate the permeability and consolidation coefficients for the analyzed clays. Based on these studies, simple relationships between the permeability coefficient and the soil behavior-type index are proposed. Proposed formulas may be applied for overconsolidated cohesive soils with soil behavior-type index values within the range of 2.05–3.30 and described in Robertson’s chart as overconsolidated silty clays, clays and heavily overconsolidated and cemented fine-grained soils. Although our proposal of determining flow parameters has been calibrated only for two analyzed cases, its utility for wider use in other overconsolidated fine-grained soils may also be taken into account.

Assessment of Soil Liquefaction Potential Based on SPT Values at Some Ground Profiles in the North Central Coast of Vietnam

The North Central Coast of Vietnam has a wide distribution of loose sand which is often exposed on the surface. The thickness changes from a few meters to over ten meters. This sand with the loose state can be sensitive to the dynamic loads, such as earthquakes, traffic load, or machine foundations. It can be liquefied under these loadings, which might destroy the ground and buildings. The Standard Penetration Test (SPT) is widely used in engineering practice and its values can be useful for the assessment of soil liquefaction potential. Thus, this article presents some ground profiles in some sites in the North Central Coast of Vietnam and determines the liquefaction potential of sand based on SPT and using three parameters, including the Factor of Safety against Liquefaction (FSLIQ), Liquefaction Potential Index (LPI), and Liquefaction Severity Number (LSN). The research results show that the FSLIQ, LPI, and LSN values depend on the depth of sand samples and the SPT values. In this study, the sand distributed from 2.0 to 18.0m with (N1)60cs value of less than 20 has high liquefaction potential with FSLIQ<1, LPI is often higher than 0.73, and LSN is often higher than 10. The results also show that many soil profiles have high liquefaction potential. These results should be considered for construction activities in this area.
