Construction renovation projects increase the risk of structural fire, mostly due to the accumulation of combustible construction materials and waste. In particular, when the building remains operational during such projects, the redistribution of occupants and interruptions with access corridors/exit egress can exponentially increase the risk for the occupants. Most construction projects are, however, planned and scheduled merely based on the time and budget criteria. While safety is considered paramount and is meant to be applied as a hard constraint in the scheduling stage, in practice, safe evacuation considerations are reduced to rules of thumb and general code guidelines. In this paper, we propose simulation as a tool to introduce safety under structural fire, as a decision criterion, to be mixed with time and budget for selecting the best construction schedule alternative. We have used the BIM (building information model) to extract the building’s spatial and physical properties; and have applied co-simulation of fire, through computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and occupants’ evacuation behavior, through agent-based modeling (ABM) to estimate the average and maximum required safe egress time for various construction sequencing alternatives. This parameter is then used as a third decision criterion, combined with the project’s cost and duration, to evaluate construction schedule alternatives. We applied our method to a three-floor fire zone in a high-rise educational building in Montreal, and our results show that considering the fire safety criterion can make a difference in the final construction schedule. Our proposed method suggests an additional metric for evaluating renovation projects’ construction plans, particularly in congested buildings which need to remain fully or partially operational during the renovation. Thus, this method can be employed by safety officers and facility managers, as well as construction project planners to guide accounting for fire incidents while planning for these types of projects.

The complexity and variability of the internal environment of public buildings prompt to think about how to protect people in the fire and quickly reach the safe area. With the help of the Internet of Things, firefighting facilities, such as fire hydrants, fire extinguishers, safety evacuation signs, fire sprinklers, fire pumps, smoke, temperature, and fire doors in buildings can be dynamically monitored and controlled. In addition, based on the relevant fire emergency evacuation strategies and ideas at home and abroad, the artificial intelligence technology is used to construct an efficient and intelligent dynamic evacuation path solving model, and an intelligent mobile terminal fire evacuation system was built for large public buildings based on artificial intelligence technology. When a fire breaks out, the system can help guide people to evacuate from the building real-time and reach the safe exit quickly, so as to reduce casualties and economic losses.

This article is important because there is no literature on emergency evacuation for mosques.  According to the current fire regulation on Turkey, the evacuation of the modern era mosque structure, which was considered adequate for escape evacuation and escape routes, was determined as a result of the simulation study.  The inadequacy of fire regulations for mosques and buildings for collection purposes has been identified and attention is drawn to the necessity of revision. Figure A. Evacuation view of the mosque in a safe evacuation time of 2.50 minutes (150 s) Purpose: It is aimed to test the reliability of emergency evacuation on a sample of modern Ottoman classical period type mosques, which are used frequently. Theory and Methods: The evacuation modeling approaches of the mosque located on the Ankara Mevlâna Bulvarı (Konya road), the emergency evacuation simulation results, and the fire safety calculations made according to the current regulation are compared and the reliability is tested. Results: Considering international safe evacuation, the users of the structures intended for collection should be able to evacuate the building within 2.5 (150sn) minutes in case of emergency. When this information is taken as a reference, it is determined that the building, which is considered as adequate and according to the current regulation, is insufficient as a result of the simulation. Conclusion: According to the current fire regulations, the evacuation of the modern period mosque structure, which was considered adequate for escape evacuation and escape routes, was determined as a result of the simulation work. For this reason, revision is required in the fire regulations for mosques and buildings.
