Blockchain technology has emerged as a transformative force within the financial sector, particularly in asset management. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the opportunities and challenges associated with integrating blockchain in asset management practices. The opportunities presented by blockchain in asset management are multifaceted. The decentralized and immutable nature of blockchain enables increased transparency and security in the tracking and transfer of assets. Smart contracts, a key feature of blockchain, automate and streamline various processes, reducing operational costs and minimizing the risk of errors. This technology also facilitates real-time settlement and enhances liquidity, contributing to increased efficiency in asset management workflows. However, along with these opportunities come substantial challenges. Regulatory uncertainties, interoperability issues, and the need for industry-wide standards are significant hurdles that the asset management sector must overcome to fully harness the potential of blockchain. Security concerns related to the custody and protection of digital assets, as well as the scalability of blockchain networks, also demand careful consideration. Moreover, the integration of blockchain in asset management necessitates a paradigm shift in organizational structures and industry practices. Stakeholders must adapt to new ways of managing and transferring assets, embracing the cultural and technological changes inherent in blockchain adoption. Education and collaboration among industry participants are crucial for navigating the complexities of this transformative technology. In conclusion, this extensive review highlights the immense potential of blockchain in revolutionizing asset management while shedding light on the formidable challenges that need to be addressed for successful implementation. As the industry continues to explore and adopt blockchain solutions, collaboration and proactive measures will be essential in maximizing the benefits and mitigating the risks associated with this groundbreaking technology.

Blockchain technology has been used for the digitalization of physical asset management and data management processes in many areas in the industry and academia, including the water domain. Its potential as an immutable data storage system and smart contract integration has provided a plethora of use cases and utility in the domain of hydrology and water resources. This systematic review critically examines the application of blockchain technology in the field of water resources and hydrology. By analyzing 104 academic publications and 37 non-academic studies from 2017 to 15 October 2022, this paper identifies the current state of blockchain applications in water management, delineates their potential use cases, and assesses their practical utility and scalability. Despite the theoretical promise of blockchain for enhancing water governance, data security, and stakeholder trust, the review reveals a noticeable gap between theoretical potential and the existence of workable, real-time applications specifically in water resources management. The findings indicate that while blockchain technology has been effectively implemented in various sectors, its adoption in hydrological domain is still emerging, with limited empirical evidence to support full-scale deployment. The paper concludes with a call for more empirical research to validate theoretical benefits, address scalability and interoperability challenges, and integrate blockchain technology with real-time data networks for sustainable water management practices.

Although blockchain technology was first applied for peer-to-peer financial transactions, it has been used for the digitalization of physical asset management and data management processes in many areas in the industry and academia, including the water domain. Its potential as an immutable data storage system and smart contract integration has provided a plethora of use cases and utility in the domain of hydrology and water resources. In this article, a comprehensive systematic literature review on blockchain applications, opportunities and challenges for the water sector is conducted. The study provides the examination of academic publications, technical reports, whitepapers, hackathon projects, non-academic content and evaluation of the published year, focused hydrology sub-domain, utilized blockchain networks, tools, and development level of application of reviewed content. The current status of blockchain technology in the hydrology literature, potential application areas in the water sector, research gaps, and challenges are discussed from different perspectives, and future study areas are recommended.
