When manufacturing fiber-reinforced composites, it is possible to improve the quality of fiber steel fire and reduce the number of cracks in the finished product if it is possible to quickly identify the defects of the fiber tow. Therefore, in this study, we developed a method to identify the condition of carbon fiber tow using eddy current test (ECT), which is used to improve the quality of composite materials. Using the eddy current detection sensor, we checked the impedance results according to the condition of the CF tow. We found that the materials of the workbench used in the experiment greatly affected the ECT results, so it is necessary to use a material with a non-conductive and smooth surface. We evaluated the impedance results of the carbon fiber at 2 mm intervals using the ECT sensor and summarized the impedance results according to the fiber width direction, presenting the condition of the section as a constant of variation (CV). If the condition of the carbon fiber tow was unstable, the deviation of the CV per section was large. In particular, the deviation of the CV per section was more than 0.15 when the arrangement of the fibers was changed, foreign substances were formed on the surface of the fibers, and damage occurred in the direction of the fiber width of more than 4 mm, so it was easy to evaluate the quality on CF tow.

Detection and Characterization Method for Interface Bonding Defects of New Composite Materials

The defects such as voids and debonding within the bonding interface between the composite and the substrate are the key factors affecting the safe use of materials. In this study, Industrial Computed Tomography (ICT) was used to perform non-destructive tests of bonding defects. High-precision characterization methods are required to quantify the defects. This paper proposes an improved image segmentation processing method for accurate extraction of defect edges and quantitative characterization. With the proposed method combining mathematical morphology and Fuzzy C-Means (FCM) threshold segmentation, the irregular defects of voids and debonding can be visualized and established with corresponding quantitative indicators. The experimental results show that the defect area error of the tested bonding layer is within ±6%, which satisfies the requirements of accurate detection and characterization of interface bonding layer defects of composite components. This work provides a strong technical basis for the reliability assessment of new ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) bonded structural members. The lightning strike protection layer, which is a mesh of metal stripes, is adhered to composite materials to dissipate the huge current induced during lightning strike. This paper presents an eddy current imaging method to inspect defects in the lightning strike protection layer. A tuning method was applied to tune the resonant frequency of excitation and sensing coils and enhance the testing results. Two parameters, namely the amplitude of induced voltage in the sensing coil and the amplitude of the voltage across a sampling resistor in the excitation circuit, were used to image the defects. The results show that the image formed by sensing coil voltage is less noisy and more accurate.
